Happy Thankful Thursday. Always things in our lives we can be thankful for – right? Right! Easter was nice – Mom got her second shot – both of those are thankfuls. The weather has been spectacular the past few days – a BIG thankful as it meant I was outside a LOT with Mom and Dad. Spring is prettier and prettier every day…..always thankful when Spring arrives. Thankful to Brian for hosting this great Hop!
Also thankful that I received Angel Sammy’s poem to share with you…………AND his new photo for NEXT week’s poem as well………….always fun!
♥♥♥
Let’s Share Poems!
Yes – let’s do that! Did you write one for the photo I gave you last week? I thought we’d all have some fun with that photograph. We ALWAYS have fun with our poems don’t we? I’m happy that some of you are as excited about Thursdays and poetry as I am. Makes me feel like these little get-togethers are worth it.
Now, wanna see the photo I gave you last week to work with? I’ll share my poem after I show you the photo………………..
“The Heart of the Home”
Poem by Angel Sammy Kimmell ©April 7, 2021
This was where the action was back in “the day”
Where you’d generally find your Mom to have your “say”
Everyone gathered around the kitchen table
To spend time together as much as they were able
You had breakfast there, licked spoons with icing there
And using her sewing shears Mom would even cut your hair!
No electronic gadgetry around – everything was easy to fix
There were lots of Mr. Fix-its in neighborhoods who knew all the tricks
The lemonade pitcher always ready in Mom’s old Kelvinator
There were no garbage disposals then; our pets were leftovers eliminators!
They say in the electronic age life is so much better and free
But the good old days of meeting in the kitchen sound mighty good to me.
In many ways the good old days really were good old days. Sure we didn’t have all the conveniences of electronic gadgetry but we really didn’t NEED them – they are just more convenience in these days of “instant gratification” and everybody working and not many hanging out at home. We want everything NOW…..back in “the day” we paced ourselves. Waiting for the cake to bake in the oven instead of getting a microwave for three minutes dessert. Oh well………..that’s progress…………right?
My Mom remembers her Grandmother’s kitchen looking a bit like this one, and when she and her family lived on an Air Force base in Alabama a long time ago, this pretty much is exactly what the kitchen looked like.
Hope you had fun with this photo………….I have next week’s photo for you! Ready? You have a week to write something to go with this one – another FLASHBACK:
I’m going to guess SOME of you tuning in will have no idea what this is……………….! But I also know that some will!
SO – that’s your assignment for next week – write a poem about this photo, and if you wrote one this week – let us know you did, give us a link so we can read it, or just write the poem in my comments here on Teddy’s blog. He doesn’t mind. Trust me. Just because I’m an Angel doesn’t mean we aren’t still close!
Have a good and safe week……………..I’m so happy my Mom is finished with her shots and that Dad will get his second one next week. I will always look after them, but I won’t WORRY as much once they are vaccinated.

I like your poem a lot Angel Sammy. I would like to have a floor like that in the kitchen to lie on now – I bet it’s nice and cool! Our wood floors are nice too especially in the winter. Have a good week at the Bridge and thank you for looking out for us. I miss you.
Oh, mama thinks those are the ladies who go around selling things to much on during movies but she’s not sure. It used to be “Cigars, cigarettes” but thank heaven that’s out!!!
Love your spring squat, enjoying the lovely air of a new season.

We’ve had some amazing Spring days…..going to be a little cooler today but I’ll be outside with Mom and Dad anyway. You’re right about next week’s poetry photo – those ladies would sell candy and cigarettes in the movie theaters. Glad that’s no longer the case too!!!

isn’t that great that we all saw the kitchen as the heart and the place we all met in our poems…why we have still living rooms? we should have big kitchens with a table like the one of king arthur, so many friends find a place there..

I would love to have a big kitchen where everyone could sit…..it’s always warm in a kitchen, almost always smells really good – pies or roasts, etc. cooking……..You could always RELAX in the kitchen. The “good old days” were good.

Great poem, Angel Sammy! It makes you wonder how they ever managed to cook a roast dinner on those ovens!
I remember those ice cream usherettes! We would see them lining up down by the stage waiting for the interval. Little tubs with a wooden spoon. No choice of flavours back then though, vanilla or nothing.

Oh wow – I don’t think I’ve ever even HEARD of ice cream usherettes – that’s rather interesting! I have been to a couple of professional baseball games where people were up and down the aisles selling all sort of things…….that was fun – I always wanted whatever they were selling and rarely had to WHINE to get my way (thanks Dad!).

I only got to go to the movies on the weekend matinee with my allowance just given to me. So I never saw these ladies. The one in front there looks completely miserable, as though she would rather be anywhere else.
Who remembers the Lunch Bar, which was a “full size” chocolate bar with whole peanuts in it, candy bar? 3 cents! And this was not the ’40’s and earlier. It lasted for sale and at that price till close to 1960.

The kitchen does remind me of the old OLD ones and does bring memories. The one that imprinted itself on my memory so much more strongly though was the one in my parents log cabin (for summers), in the woods near Roanoke. That was primal! Wood stove that one put kindling in, etc. We even had to have our baths in a wash tub In the kitchen. The heating was a fireplace. There was a fine outhouse. And snakes? I reckon!

OH WOW! What a memory that must be for you…….fun but really an adventure too because it must have been very different from being home. SNAKES???? No thank you1!!!!!!

The kitchen was always the “heart” of the home. Appliances lasted forever. Now you’re lucky if they make 2 years.
Mom remembers those ladies who came around at the theater.

My Mom doesn’t recall those ladies – I guess that may have been because other than when she lived on post with the movie theater right down the street or in Taiwan where that was the ONLY entertainment available (no TV there), she just never went to the movies and they didn’t employ these ladies. Her parents were not movie-goers. Mom re-discovered theaters when she started dating….especially drive-ins!!! 🙂 🙂 🙂

Times sure have changed…………great job on the poem! Yes we had similar thoughts about “simple” kitchens vs. modern ones of today!

The heart of the home. We still sit in the kitchen a lot. When I was a child nobody had fridges, microwave ovens, phones, televisions, coffee dispensers and cars and life was good and we all were happy.
Thank you Angel Sammy for this poem, so many memories just in one picture.

Yes that’s why we loved the photo when Angel Sammy sent it – lots of wonderful memories! My husband and I often eat all our meals in the kitchen – it’s a more “friendly” and comfy spot rather than our formal dining room.

Wonderful things to be thankful for. And that is a great poem from Angel Sammy. The good old days were good, but without modern tools I would not know you so I am thankful for modern conveniences. 🙂 Have a great day! XO

Mitzi remembers being a candy and cigarette girl back in the day, but she’s wondering why those outfits are covering too much. And where’s the sign for the “special?”

If those girls had on just a watch Mitzi would think they were too covered up! I’m a little worried about asking this but what was the “special” ? Maybe I’d better look that up???? Was it like what the barbers used to ask guys when they’d get a Friday night haircut? “Need ANYTHING for the weekend?????”

That old timey kitchen looks so welcoming – a lot of modern kitchens look like operating rooms – all sterile and without much personality! Mom said she didn’t remember going to any movie theaters that had those girls selling candy/cigarettes, etc. but HER Mom talked about them.

What wonderful Thankfuls this week friends, super!
That photo was really nice and the poem is great. When Dad was real young his granny had a “Modern” Kitchen. The stove and fridge were 50s models and the sink although one big cast iron piece had cabinets. Oh the meals we had in the dining room during holidays. We have come far but we have given a lot away in that journey. Dad renovated a lot of kitchens just like this one. He says “Gawd those sinks were Heavy”
Thanks Sammy dear friend.

So many people related to that photo – it was a “friendly” kitchen rather than a sterile one like many modern ones are even with all the new conveniences – there’s still no place like sitting around the kitchen table with family.

Actually although I didn’t research it, it looks just like the “display” in the Smithsonian Museum in DC where they have “the way it used to be” room set-ups. Now I haven’t been downtown to the museums in some years but they had a kitchen that looked JUST LIKE THIS. Anyway, it looks comfortable doesn’t it.

Enjoyed the poem! I really love that sink. I don’t remember the ladies at the movie theaters. The people at the show look so dressed up… nobody dresses up anymore. Maybe it is just me, I live in the land of flip flops!

Used to get dressed up to go to the movie theater – interesting how things have changed….like dressing up to go somewhere on an airplane…..nowadays I suppose we should feel lucky that people traveling wear clothes at all instead of their PJs (EeEEEEEEEEEEeeK)!

My mom bathed my baby brother in a sink like that…I bet my sister and I did too…LOL!
I love the cozy feeling I get from that picture!
Next week?? Hmmm, we never were allowed into theaters, and I didn’t go to any movies, either…except that my aunt took my sister and I to see ‘How The West Was Won’ when I was about 10…but there were no vendor ladies…and Auntie A didn’t buy us any drinks or snacks either…LOL! She had a roll of peppermints…or ‘church pills’ as we fondly called them, cause we got them in church when the sermon started:)
Didn’t have time this week to think up a poem…
