Bacon Round The World: France

Standard

Ohhhh La La!   We are in France!

Oui Oui, mon amis……we are outside a Paris brasserie and I have another recipe for you!

My Mom and Dad have been to Paris twice………….once on their honeymoon in 1990 and again in September of 2001.    They stayed in downtown Paris in 1990 but in Montmartre in 2001.   They say that the BEST FOOD ever was in the little bistros or brasseries that were on EVERY corner….friendly people, delicious food, and many memories made.   The photo I’m in above is not a place where they ate, but is representative of the many wonderful and homey places where you can get just about anything from a cup of coffee to a 10 course amazing meal.    One of the things my Mom and Dad both loved was the lovely onion tart.    I thought I’d give you a recipe for one so you can enjoy it yourself!!   AND – OF COURSE – it has bacon in it…………………..

Tarte a l’Oignon (French Onion Pie)

Ingredients:

10 slices bacon cut into 1″ pieces

5 thinly sliced onions

1 teaspoon salt

1/8 teaspoon black pepper

1/2 cup milk

1/2 cup heavy cream

1 tablespoon flour

4 eggs

1 pinch nutmeg

1 9″ unbaked pie crust

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C).
  2. Place the bacon into a skillet, and cook over medium heat until browned. Remove bacon from skillet, reserving 4 tablespoons bacon fat, and drain on paper towels.
  3. Place the onions into the same skillet with the bacon fat, and cook over medium-high heat until evenly browned, about 8 minutes. Season with salt and pepper. Combine the milk and cream in a bowl. Sprinkle the flour over the onions, and stir to blend. Stir in the milk mixture. Cook and stir over medium heat until the mixture thickens. Remove from heat, stir in the bacon, and set aside to cool 10 minutes.
  4. Beat the eggs in a mixing bowl until light colored and frothy. Stir a spoonful of the onion mixture into the eggs. Add another spoonful of the onion mixture, and continue stirring. Repeat, until all the onions have been stirred into the eggs and are thoroughly blended. Pour the mixture into the prepared pie shell. Sprinkle with nutmeg.
  5. Bake in preheated oven until the crust is lightly browned, about 20 minutes. Remove from the oven and cool 5 minutes before serving.

HEAVENLY!  (and easy)

Where will the King’s Bacon Brigade go next week???  Tune in next Saturday and find out!

Your King….searching the world for the best in bacon………

Friendly Fill-Ins

Standard

Hello everyone!  Time for our regular Friday fun with our co-hosts, 15andMeowing and Four-Legged Furballs!    Each week they give us two sentences each with some words missing and WE supply the words thereby sharing a little bit of info about ourselves.  Cool huh?    If you click the badge above it will take you to 15andmeowing and YOU can join in the fun with us – just fill out the LINKY form!

This week’s sentences are below and I’m going to fill them in ALL BY  MYSELF this week………………..my fill-ins are in RED.

1. My favorite scent is rabbit – let me clarify – we have rabbits running around in our yard and while I’m not allowed to chase them, I do like to follow their scent and pretend I’m a great hunter!.

2. I hope to get plenty of naps this weekend.   (note from Mom:   Teddy gets plenty of naps every single day believe me!)
3. Mom’s whistle is music to my ears.   (note from Mom:   when Ted is out in the yard with his Dad and I come outside – I whistle and David drops the leash and Teddy comes running to me from wherever he is……I love it!)
4. Home is where I am SAFE.
I hope you enjoyed my fill-ins today!   Mom usually does them but this week’s sentences seemed to be perfect for me to take a whack at myself.   I always enjoy reading everyone else’s fill-ins and learning more about all of my friends.

Happy Friday!

Hugs, Teddy

P.S.  Tomorrow on Bakin’ With Bacon I will be in FRANCE with a bacon recipe for you!

Thankful and Thoroughly Poetic Thursday

Standard

Time to be Thankful AND Poetic!

First we take care of joining up with Brian’s Blog Hop which is all about being thankful……………we look back at the week and find some thankfuls and we can ALWAYS find some!    If you’d like to tell the world about yours, just click the badge above and fill out the LINKY form……then share your thankfuls with other thankful peeps!     Today I want to tell a short tale of BRIEF freedom and my thankfulness that my Mom found me.    What am I talking about?   Well this morning Mom let me out into the garage thinking the garage door was SHUT.   I am only allowed out on my harness WITH a parent.    Guess what – the door was up – Dad had left it up when he went out to work on a project in our woods.   Mom did NOT KNOW THAT…………..over a half hour later she took iced tea to Dad and noticed that the door in the garage was UP.   PANIC BUTTON……………she ran around the yard calling my name thinking I could be ANYWHERE in thirty whole minutes of freedom……..our neighbor boys heard Mom screeching and came out to help find me and THEY did!  I was next door in their yard and had been the whole time.   Mom was so grateful to the boys and they were so sweet to help old Mom.    I was just glad to get back in the house to have a big drink of water and a nice cold floor to lie on!!!!   Will I do that again?   Probably not.   Mom will LOOK to make sure the garage door is closed.    I love my garage – I have a window seat out there that is my perfect spy spot.   I enjoyed my taste of freedom but know what???    THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE HOME!

Now, onward to the second part of our post today which is sharing the email I got from my Angel brother Sammy with you – where he’s used the photo challenge he gave us LAST week to write his poem.    Hopefully some of you have done the same thing – written a poem based on his photo inspiration – don’t forget to tell us you wrote one and share your link with us and everyone else!     Here’s his email from last night’s transmission from his laptop at the Rainbow Bridge:

♥♥♥

Hello Poets and Friends!

It’s Thursday – the day we get together and share our poetry.    You know the drill – the photo I gave you last Thursday has been sitting around gathering dust since last week and then you remembered to take it out, dust it off, study it and let it inspire you to write a poem about it.   Easy right?    Well, I just want you to have fun with it.    And after I share the poem that I wrote I will give you ANOTHER photo to use for next Thursday when we’ll all gather together again and share our poetic efforts.

I really enjoy finding photos for you (and me) every week.   I try to find interesting photos and you all know as I do that everyone’s imagination is different so you might see something in the poem that’s different from what I see or anyone else sees………that’s what makes this FUN!

Here’s last week’s photo followed by MY effort at writing a poem inspired by it:

“Happy Days”

By Angel Sammy Kimmell     June 21, 2018

Laundry out there hanging on the old clothesline

Waving in the breeze and smelling fresh and fine

Mama’s magic in the kitchen cookin’ homemade delights

Every dish she creates yummy until the very last bites

Her aprons protect her dresses from all drips and splashes

Even after stoking up the stove she can wipe her hands of ashes

Aprons take a lot of punishment but they are very necessary

Keeping Mom’s dresses from cookin’ oil and juice from all those berries!

A week’s worth of aprons means a week’s worth of home cookin’

People drive by in their farm trucks and are always a-lookin’

They know Mama’s been busy when seven aprons on the line they see

They know she’s had a full week of work to feed her hungry family.

Well that’s my poem – where’s yours?   Just tell us in our comments that you wrote one, and give us your blog link OR write the poem in our comments if you want to – but whatever you do, write a poem because you will enjoy crafting something of your VERY OWN!    Poetry doesn’t have to rhyme – it just has to express something you feel or see or think……go for it.   If you didn’t write one this week – use the photo below to write one for NEXT week……………..we’d love to read it – honest we would!

Cool photo huh?   I think so…………..Notice the kitty in the foreground?   Nice touch huh?    Have fun with this one – I imagine there will be some really cool poetry next Thursday and I hope you will join me here to see mine and discover who else has taken a leap of creative faith and written their own!!

Meanwhile, have a great week my friends…………thanks for visiting Teddy’s blog on Thursday and EVERY day.    I may be gone but I’m still with you always.

I am the Angel Poet in the green beret…..and I hope you join me for POETIC FUN each week!

Angel Hugs, Sammy

Oh Sammy I love your clothesline poem…………..our Mom says she can remember just how yummy things out on the clothesline would smell after being washed and all that fresh air drying things out.   Especially sheets – oh boy that first night in sheets dried out on the line was heavenly so she says.   I don’t need sheets to sleep well – just a quiet spot where I can dream!

See you all next week for Thankful and Poetic Thursday

Love, Teddy

Teaser Tell All

Standard

Ta Daaaa!  Let’s tell and show all shall we??

Hello class.   What a great Teaser yesterday don’t you think?   A very unusual photo too of what looks like an interesting place to live.    All those very similar looking homes so close together but yet you go to any big city and you find a spot very much like this.   We’ll tell you where this is in a minute BUT FIRST…………….

Announcing First Commenter(s)

That’s right – we had a bumper crop of FIRSTIES yesterday.   No doubt we’ll have some grumpy cheer team members but they are currently soaking in Sarge’s hot tub so they will be in a good mood by the time they get dried off and arrive for cheer time.   Who were the FIRSTIES this week??

Friends Furever, Timmy Tomcat, Madi AND Calvin/Oliver!

Each of you gets to go home with a little badge to prove you were up early and you were alert enough to comment this morning!!

I was one of the FIRST COMMENTERS this morning and I’m proud of it! YAY for me on the Teaser post of June 19,2018!

TOO LATE DOODS – others got here before you!

Then we sat back and WAITED………………..WAITED to see who would figure out where this photo was taken……………coulda been SO many different spots on the globe………..but it was only one spot and I guess I should quit torturing you and tell you WHERE it was and WHO was first??????

This very interesting photo with all the similar houses all crammed and jammed together is in the interesting community of BACK BAY in Boston, Massachusetts!    WHO was the first to figure that out????????

The suspense is killing me!

It was TIMMY TOMCAT!!!

GROOVY TIMMY! TOTALLY FAR OUT!

Timmy you get this for your SMARTY PANTS guess my friend!!!

I was the FIRST RIGHT GUESSER on the Teaser of June 19, 2018! YAY FOR ME!!!!

Let’s have a big fat cheer for our winners today shall we?

OOPS – give us a minute Professors – hand out the RIGHT GUESSER and NOT RIGHT GUESSER badges or something – we are still SOAKING!  We’ll get dressed and be right there!!

OK – we’ll wait for the team to get out of the tub………………….

If you were RIGHT today but not FIRST you still get a badge – after all, being CORRECT with your guess is a big accomplishment – most of our Teasers are TOUGHIES so guessing correctly deserves something!   Please take one of these for YOU:

I was RIGHT but I wasn’t FIRST on the Teaser of June 19, 2018….but I get this nice badge anyway! YAY FOR ME!

And if you were one of those who made a guess but were WRONG, you still get credit because at least you TRIED – please take one of these for your very own!

WHOOPs – I was wrong with my guess on the Teaser of June 19, 2018 but I still get this badge to prove I tried!

OK – I see four very drippy and wet cheer team members here who are ready to cheer the winners…………………………………….it’s all yours gang:

Gosh this is like a wet t-shirt contest……woo hoo

Sorry we were in the tub soaking
Time got away from us and we’re not joking
A bonanza crop of you commented FIRST
Saying all these names will give us a powerful thirst!
There was Sharon, Oliver/Calvin, Timmy and Madi too
All crowded in to comment early – it was quite a zoo!
Then same the big test of where the photo was taken
We knew there’s be one winner while other hearts were breakin’
Who was the FIRSTIE who guessed it right?
It was TIMMY TOMCAT he was outta sight!
His Dad knew the photo since he’d been there before
And there were some others who figured it out too – they all knew the score.
Congrats to our winners we’re so proud of you
Come back next week again and we’ll see how you do!

OK Team – you can head back to the Hot Tub…………Sarge has finally decided that it’s OK for others to use the tub when he’s not around………..so you don’t have to SNEAK in there any more!!!

Oh boy – I’ll add some more hot water – everybody in the tub!

I’d say this was a good class today – wouldn’t you?    Miss Dingleberry has your lunch for you – it’s burger/hot dog day AND for dessert – ICE CREAM!!!!

Ice Cream Sundaes

Perfect on a hot school day!    Enjoy – congratulations to the winners today – we will be back next week with another photo TEST for you……….meanwhile, stay cool!

Your Professors, Sammy and Teddy

Some people collect these little badges you know – and if you win one we hope you will be proud of it too!    Then of course you can win OTHER badges – like if you are the FIRST RIGHT GUESSER, or a RIGHT GUESSER, or even if you do NOT study and you do NOT guess right – you can still win something:

My selfie today is a FLASHBACK……………….this is the very FIRST selfie Mom ever helped me take………..back in February, 2017 when I’d only lived here a couple of weeks.   You can tell I’m already comfy……I’m yellow-ish in this photo and I have no idea what kind of filter Mom used to get that but I do know I’m sound asleep in my new Daddy’s chair.   I think by then I realized that I HAD IT MADE here in this house – don’t you?

So that’s my selfie for today – a look back at me in my first selfie as a VERY HAPPY GUY!    I hope you have a happy Sunday too……………………if you’re celebrating Father’s Day I hope you enjoy making your Dad feel special.   I’m going to give my Dad extra leg hugs today – he likes that – just my say of saying I LOVE YOU POP!!

Bacon Round The World: Germany

Standard

Teddy the Traveling Bacon Chef!

Surprise!   I’m on the move!

Now that Summer is almost here, I thought I’d take a bit of a world cruise and see the sights – since I’ll be going lots of places, I thought I’d pick up some recipes to share with you along the way.   All of which will – of course – involve the ingredient we Baconians love the best – BACON!

My first stop on my world tour is Germany and this happens to be one of the towns my parents visited on their Rhine River cruise some years ago – Regensberg.    A lovely town – and this restaurant where I’m standing is a bratwurst place right on the river that runs through the town.   Mom and Dad had a brewski and a brats here but when I stopped here, the chef shared his recipe with me for one of my parents’ FAVORITE things………….

Authentic German Potato Salad

Ingredients:

3 cups sliced potatoes

4 slices bacon

1 small onion diced

1/4 cup white vinegar

2 tablespoons water

3 tablespoons sugar

1 teaspoon salt

1/8 teaspoon pepper

1 tablespoon chopped parsley

Directions:

  1. Place the potatoes into a pot, and fill with enough water to cover. Bring to a boil, and cook for about 10 minutes, or until easily pierced with a fork. Drain, and set aside to cool.
  2. Place the bacon in a large deep skillet over medium-high heat. Fry until browned and crisp, turning as needed. Remove from the pan and set aside.
  3. Add onion to the bacon grease, and cook over medium heat until browned. Add the vinegar, water, sugar, salt and pepper to the pan. Bring to a boil, then add the potatoes and parsley. Crumble in half of the bacon. Heat through, then transfer to a serving dish. Crumble the remaining bacon over the top, and serve warm.

Easy right?   Easy and extremely delicious………it’s traditionally served warm but of course it’s just as tasty cold………there’s something about warm potato salad and brats or any German sausages that makes for a perfect meal – oh and a COLD beverage of your choice of course!

Where will I go next?  Tune in next Saturday and find out!

Your King – traveling far and wide to bring you the best from ’round the world with BACON!!

Friendly Fill-Ins

Standard

Friday!  YAY!   Time to do a little filling in of blanks in sentences – tons of fun too if you ask me……….and easy to join in because all you have to do is click the badge above, fill in the LINKY form and you’re in.   This fun hop is co-hosted by Four-Legged Furballs and 15andMeowing.   Each week each of our co-hosts gives us TWO sentences with blanks and we just fill them in.  Easy right?

I decided to share filling in duties with my Mom this week.   If it’s ME supplying the words, they are in RED and if it’s Mom answering, they are in BLUE!

1. My favorite Disney character is Mickey Mouse!   I bet you can figure out why (squeak!).
2. If I could stay any age for life, I would choose to be age TWO – I turned two in March and I’m having more fun than EVER so I think THIS is a good age to stay.
3. Reading Tarot cards is my secret talent.
4. Life is like a roller coaster – ups and downs and moving WAY WAY too fast.

Well that was fun……………we want to thank our co-hosts for the Hop……..Fridays are a good day to end the week on a high note and doing fill-ins is a high note for sure.   Why not join in the fun?

Hugs, Pam and Teddy too

Thankful and Thoroughly Poetic Thursday

Standard

Here we are on another Thankful Thursday.   Our friend Brian has this Hop every week so we can all get together and celebrate the things we’re thankful for!   If you’d like to join in and tell the world your “thankfuls” – just click the badge above and fill out the LINKY tool.   It’s great to really give some thought to all the things we’re thankful for and share.    This week I have a weird thankful.   Believe it or not I’m thankful for all the SKINKS who have invaded our yard!

They are great fun……they’re SO fast – too fast for me to catch them but I sure do try.    They like to hang out in the stone wall of our stone garden – also by the azalea bushes on the side of our yard, AND under our front sidewalk!    Under the sidewalk you ask?  Yes because over the 21 years Mom and Dad have lived here since having the house built, it has settled a lot and there’s a bit of a space under the concrete sidewalk where the front porch stairs are.   Dad has put concrete blocks in to cover up the space but those skinks are sneaky – they can get through the tiniest spaces.   They love to tease me – they stick their heads out and wait for me and then disappear when I get to them.   So why is that a thankful thing?   Well it gives me HOURS of entertainment – I am NEVER bored – and it’s just as wonderful as bird or squirrel TV!

I also have to say I’m thankful that Angel Sammy came through for all of us again with a poem for Poetic Thursday………..here’s what he sent to me via email to share with all of you!

♥♥♥

Hello friends and fans of poetry.   It’s time for us to spend a little time on Thursday sharing our poetry that’s been inspired by a photo…….you see a photo and all kinds of things go through your head.    It’s easy enough to put your feelings or thoughts into a poem because poetry is flexible – it doesn’t have to rhyme – it’s just an EXPRESSION so I say GO FOR IT.   Be brave and write a poem.   Maybe you have?   If so, please let us know in our comments here so we can read yours.   I thought the photo I gave you last week was FUN and I hope your poem was fun to write too.     Here’s the photo I gave you……………

Here’s my photo-poem – then I’ll give you another photo to study until NEXT Thursday when we will all share our poems again – Deal?

“Tiny World”

By Angel Sammy Kimmell    June 14, 2018

On the forest floor there’s another world

Rich moist soil, tiny ferns unfurl

The inhabitants of this place so fertile and small

We don’t see as we walk through destroying it all

Tiny flowers, tiny homes, tiny burrows and plants

Home to worms, little insects and millions of ants!

They hurry around on a mission of survival and toil

As they build their stockades out of pebbles and soil

They survive in groups, defend their own, and pillage and loot

Then a human comes along with big feet and destroys it all with his boot!

HA!  I bet you didn’t see that coming did you?    I guess I don’t normally write humorous poems – but I couldn’t resist.    I hope you’ve written one too?

Here’s next week’s photographic inspiration.    Study it for a whole week then share your poem with us NEXT Thursday.   I bet you can come up with something great if you just give it a try.

This will be a good one don’t you think?    I’ll look forward to having a little poetic fun with you next week.    As always, it will be a busy week ahead here at the Rainbow Bridge.   I am sure most people think we Angels just sit on our clouds and sleep the day away but we are always busy;  on guard watching our families, teaching things to the new arrivals, learning from the wise ones who were here when we arrived, and WAITING…………waiting for our families so one day we will have a big reunion!

Have a good week my friends……………………………

I am the Angel Poet in the green beret…..and I hope you join me for POETIC FUN each week!

Love and Angel Kisses, Sammy

♥♥♥

Gosh Angel Sammy I like your poem today.   It was such a surprise ending!    Mom says sometimes when she’s crunching her way through the woods she wonders what might be under those layers of leaves…..what kinds of small worlds she’s walking on top of……and hoping if she destroys something, the “inhabitants” will rebuild.    I promise to be a good boy in the week ahead and will look forward to your next transmission from the Bridge.

Hugs to everyone…………Teddy
