Thankful and Poetic Thursday

Standard

Hi everyone……Thursday is here already.    Time for us to be THANKFUL “out loud” for Brian’s Hop.    If you’d like to join in and tell everyone what you’re thankful for this week, click his badge and link up.    It’s also Poetic Thursday with my Angel brother Sammy.    Every week he gives us a photo and we use it as inspiration to write a poem – lots of fun.

First up – thankfuls.   I’m so thankful my parents are protected by having had their shots and I wish, hope and pray that everyone gets the shots.    Herd immunity will work if everyone participates and protects themselves AND those around them.    Also very thankful that we have so far one of the prettiest Springs EVER.    I’m spending more time than ever out in the yard thanks to the willingness of my Mom and Dad to take me out and let me wander (or lie in the grass which is my favorite thing!).    Thank you Brian for hosting a Hop that’s ALLLL about being thankful!

Now for Angel Sammy’s Poetic event…………………..

Thursday is Poetry Corner Day!

Hi everyone.   Those of you who participate in my Thursday poetic challenge make sure and leave your link to your poem in our comments here on my brothers blog.    We want to read your poems!    I try to find fun and interesting photos for us all to use as “creative nudges” for our brains – inspiring some great fun as we read everyone’s poems.

Here’s last week’s photo that I gave you to write a poem about to share TODAY with everyone.   You always get a whole week to think about what to write.    Today I’ll give you a photo for NEXT Thursday.   Plenty of time to CREATE!!    This photo I gave you last week could have been taken within a couple miles of my house – the Virginia countryside is covered with farmer’s markets and produce stands by the road just like this one!

“Fresh and Flavorful!”

Poem by Angel Sammy Kimmell      ©April 21, 2021

There’s just nothing like home grown goods

With luck there’s a farm close to your neighborhood

Grocery stores have plenty of “fruit and veg”

But their freshness is often just “on the edge”

Buying from a farm or a roadside stand

Means you get super fresh AND give those farmers a hand

They’re friendly and happy to share the bounty

Often a short drive away in your very own county!

The best produce is often a short drive away

You’ll be surprised too at how little you pay!

We are so lucky to live pretty far away from the big city of Washington, DC.   We live in “horse country” near the Shenandoah Valley and the Blue Ridge Mountains and there are lots of huge farms and estates around here.    It’s VERY easy to drive out of our little town just a very few miles and find roadside stands or signs at farm entrances for fresh eggs and vegetables.    What a TREAT.    Not just that but Mom and Dad say you meet the NICEST people selling their wares.    Lots of farmers even give their “extra produce” away.   They’re just happy to have someone take and enjoy their bounty.     Sharing is caring.

So here’s the photo I found for you to use for NEXT week’s poem.   You’ve got a week to come up with a poem – remember, poetry takes MANY MANY forms…..short, long, rhyming or not – it’s in the WORDS and not the size of the poem.

Kind of a fun photo isn’t it?   I wondered what that lead duck has on his head –  a hat?  Earmuffs?   This will be a fun one for us to use as inspiration for a poem.    We’ll share them next Thursday.

Meanwhile, thanks for joining in the fun.    Give poetry a try – I promise you’ll enjoy it…………………..REALLY!

I am the Angel Poet in the green beret…..and I hope you join me for POETIC FUN each week!

Love, Angel Sammy

Thanks for visiting us again Angel Sammy.   My week wouldn’t be the same if you didn’t do Poetic Thursday.     I will look forward to NEXT Thursday but please feel free to visit me in my dreams ANY TIME!

Love, Teddy

  1. I was out most of the day…no poem this week…but those farm stands are great, and we have them around here too! Yum!!
Each year I go with the ladies from our Bible Study group to Shipshewana…now that is where they have rows and rows of farm stands and other stuff all in long rows. Tires you out! But their things are very fresh and delish! Last year we bought peaches as we were in August, and they were the juiciest and sweetest ever! You can buy garden plants there too. I bought cat statuary there, after I lost Minko, from one of the non food vendors. Shall hunt for more to honor Pipo…

    • YES!!! We can do that here and I’m so grateful……many of the farms have “come and pick your own” days – take a basket, walk through the fields and harvest strawberries or apples or WHATEVER they’re growing. It’s like the old days. LOL

  2. We get a lot of those stalls too, and if we are passing nearly always buy something. I get my fruit and veg delivered weekly. Strictly speaking it is a wholesaler and not a farmer’s market, but almost everything is sourced within 30 miles. The produce is much fresher and lasts longer than from a supermarket. The potatoes even have dirt on instead of being scrubbed spotless. I have even got to know which area of farms they come from by looking at the soil on them! If they have a greyish sandy soil I know they are going to be the best ever!!

    • I’m so happy that we can get FRESH food when many times grocery items are just plain SAD. It’s wonderful you have to scrub your potatoes to get the dirt off – THAT’s what FRESH is all about!!!!!

  3. Oh my yummy-ness! We loved this photo choice, in a very personal way. Our head and heart just overflowed with memories … this was a “keeper” for us.
And of course, to this day, we love “roadside stands” and in-city farmer’s markets!

    • You meet the NICEST people at a roadside stand or farmer’s market…..everyone is smiling…..grateful…..friendly. The local in-town farmer’s market started back up last weekend here. It had closed due to the pandemic – we are HAPPY again. Glad you enjoyed the photo!!

    • Binky your poem today is fabulous…….!!!! You are a wonderful poet indeed. I have found (as have you) that the only way to keep that “other kitty” from following you around in the sunshine is to head for the shade. That phantom cat disappears in the shade and we can take a great nap without him bothering us! Have a wonderful Thursday……..

    • Well done poetry this week as always!! This particular photo looks like MANY of the stands around here and now that farmers are back to sharing their bounty again, I’m visiting them more and more often. Next best thing to growing my own which I used to do when I was a whole lot younger. Thanks for “playing” poetry with us every week.

  5. Teddy, there is nothing like home grown or farm grown fruit and veggies. The stuff in stores is usually hard and faintly flavored hot house grown. The duck picture is adorable. We seem hardwired to love seeing animal families like that. And Teddy, seeing the last picture of you and all the hearts just warmed my entire day. That was appropriate. If someone took a picture of me and Katie this morning still in the bed before we were going to get up…there would have been hearts aplenty to see fluttering up. I love those minutes of snuggles and smoochies and paw pats.

    • Awwwwwww…..no leopard last night? Good! Yeah we loved that duck photo too and thought it might make for a fun poetry “opportunity”. Following the leader, or a duck conga line, or some such silliness! I’m sure Angel Sammy will figure out something for that photo. Glad you liked my heart-y photo. I couldn’t resist using that one again. I think Mom did that one for Valentine’s Day or something lovey dovey like that. Hope you and Katie have a cozy day together!!!!!!

    • Great poem……almost everyone who wrote a poem today has focused on how DIFFERENT the fruits and veg are from a stand vs. in the grocery store. Truly FRESH food is so much better isn’t it! Thanks for being poetry partners with us.

  6. Wonderful thankfuls and an excellent poem from Angel Sammy. I agree, there is nothing like fresh veggies. I can’t even buy zucchini at the store, I just wait for my hubby to grow it all summer. Have a nice day. XO

  7. I love buying farm fresh vegetables. I live in the city, but there is a market downtown where the farmers come in on Saturdays and sell their food. Once things get back to normal I hope to shop there again. Great poem!

  8. We wish we had fresh produce stands like that. There are a couple of “farm” stands at the local outdoor markets but most of them buy their produce to resell from wholesalers.

    Fun photo for next week!

  9. We have a farm store near. Was afraid to go last year. I love the fresh fruit and veggies. They have homemade caramel apples and or homemade items too at certain times of the year. Enjoy your day. I have been up since 2:30am.

    • It’s already starting to show up here but not as many stands as there WILL be. Most of what we see now has been grown in hothouses/greenhouses around here. Soon though there will be MORE and MORE!

  10. Sweet pic and poem. We are also lucky to live near a real farm stand. We watch the seedlings on social media all winter and spring and see them unloading the truck of goodies on summer Saturdays. The sign says, “FREE SLUGS” which does NOT make Mom feel happy, but so far, nothing gross has hitched a ride on our lettuce.

    Love and licks,

  11. Sammy’s poem captures our local stands! We have some pretty big, almost commercial stands in the Okanagan. Fruit is big business with the Tourists but in the Sunshine Valley, some look just like the one in the photo. I can’t wait for June! Thanks for visiting and we hope you all have a marvellously happy day!

    • The little stands are the “closest” to family-run…..some of our larger farms have good sized stands with more produce but even the little ones are SO much better than store-bought!!

    • Great poem!! Well done – farmer’s markets are SOOOOOOOOO fun and Mom and Dad always feel like they’ve gotten more FRESH food from them than the grocery. It’s been cold here too – I’m not happy about that but at least I get to go outside still. Let’s hope next week’s supposed WARM weather is for real!!
