Happy Thursday – time to be thankful AND creative. First up though is thankfuls – always a priority…..there are things we should be thankful for that we may not even THINK we need to express. Even if it’s clean air and sunshine – that’s something to be thankful for when (if you’re like us) you’ve had four days straight of rain. We’re also very thankful that Brian continues to host Thankful Thursday and keep us focused on all the things in our lives we should express thanks for. One day soon my Mom and I sincerely hope we can say we’re thankful that Ukraine is rising from the ashes and walking into the sunshine of freedom.
Now for Angel Sammy’s poetry fun – here’s his note to all of us that I got last night:
♥♥♥
Welcome to My Poetry Corner….
Are you ready to share some poetry? We can read each other’s poems and see how each of us independently interpreted the photograph I gave you last Thursday to use as inspiration for your poem today. I love it! I love what you all write – and I’m so happy some of you seem to be having fun along with me for Poetic Thursday.
Here’s the photo I gave you last week – followed by my poem.
“Memories Are Made Of This”
Poem by Angel Sammy Kimmell ©May 11, 2022
Sitting at the counter waiting for my lunch
Cherry Coke, burger and fries – can’t wait to munch
If I have room after I’ll have a banana split
The counter is crowded – nowhere else to sit!
In walks Tommy – he’s my latest crush
He puts his hand on my shoulder and I turn to mush!
Sandy and Bobby get up to dance
Who thought a soda fountain would be made for romance?
Well that was the place back in “the day” (according to my Mom) where kids met and dates were made and boys teased the girls and crushes were started and ended. There is an old soda fountain in the town where my Mom and Dad live that has been refurbished and is part of a small restaurant on Main Street. These days mostly older folks go in and get a “homemade” kind of meal…….but I also bet you that they are reliving a lot of GREAT memories when they walk through the doors. I know my Mom sure does!
Now here’s the photo I found for all of us to write a poem about to share NEXT week when we gather here……….meanwhile if you wrote a poem for last week’s photo – tell us in comments and give us your link so we can read it!
Not long ago I used another old Victorian photo of two women but it was more about their clothes………….this is obviously about HAIR – and lots of it! What does this make you think of and how would you include those thoughts in a poem???? That’s your challenge for next Thursday.
Until then – I hope you all stay happy, healthy, and interested in the world around you. That keeps us going!
Love and Light, Angel Sammy

Another gem of a poem dear brother! Next week’s is scary. If my hair was that long Mom would be cutting it as often as she cuts my claws! And I’d probably be getting lots of baths – things I don’t even want to think about…………haha See you next Thursday!
Hugs, Teddy
We too hope for a thankful like yours…sooner than later.
Here is my poem and you know, tat food/soda aspect didn’t even get into it. LOL! For me too, it did bring back some memories…yup, I am ancient, too.
The Five and Ten
Those Fabulous Five and Tens
To history have gone down…
This makes me feel sad,
And I have to frown.
I remember those stores-
Perusing the aisles after entering their doors.
To marvel at everything;
To behold
All they had there,
to be sold.
And the Cash Register went Ding-caching!
Shelves full of toys
To lure both girls and boys;
All kinds of kitchen things,
For your skin there were potions,
And many a bin
Filled with notions.
There were frocks for the women,
And jeans for the men.
Perhaps a clock that said ‘Cuckoo’!
One went to this store when you needed a new shoe!
All kinds of tools for the mechanic-
Or for the garden…
Whoops! Sorry I wasn’t looking…
I was reminiscing!
Sorry I bumped you…
I do beg your pardon!
All that and more,
Were found in that store…
I’d love to go back to that simpler time…
Alas, they are gone –
And you’ll need far more than a dime!

This is pure magic – full of memories like the ones I have and you can almost smell the aroma coming from the second you walk in the door. They all had a certain smell – inviting is an understatement! Brilliant poem Ingrid.

I used to LOVE “real” cherry Coke at the soda fountain – the stuff they sell in the store is no match for the real thing!!

I LOVE that poem and it is what I would have written had I done so!!! Loved the fountain. Cherry Coke? Oh yes. That’s when they were good. Remember the chocolate and vanilla ones?

They’ve tried to recreate some of those Coke variations but they are just plain AWFUL. The original is always the BEST!

Wonderful poem. That is some long hair on the next photo. You find the neatest photos. Hot and humid again. I hate to see what August will bring in WI. That is usually our hotest month. Have a great day and give Teddy a hug from me.

August will be BRUTAL everywhere (and we wouldn’t want to have all that hair in August either!!!). 🙂 🙂 🙂

My first ‘date’ 2nd grade…was at a soda counter. Our moms sat in one booth and we sat in another.
Am I correct in remembering the folks working the counters were called soda jerks?

Great poem, Sammy. Periwinkle & Stinky had fun when they went to the old Soda Shop we have here. Mom also remembers when her sister worked at a drug store that had the soda fountain when she was in high school. Mom apologizes for not posting a poem. Maybe she can keep working on the one she started and post it tomorrow. Next week’s photo is a doozy! Mom says she would be so hot with that much hair that she’d have to go around naked. We sure wouldn’t want to see that! XOCK, angel Lily Olivia, angel Mauricio, Misty May, angel Giulietta, angel Fiona, Astrid, Lisbeth, Calista Jo, Cooper Murphy, Sawyer & Kizmet

It’s amazing about the hair – I wonder if it was some kind of trend of the time? Also what the heck did they do with all of that??? Wind it up on top of the head? A gigantic braid? Imagine WASHING IT???? Anyway, no problem about writing a poem for the soda shop. A fun memory for a lot of us though isn’t it.

Lovely poem Angel Sammy. We never had soda fountains here but coffee bars were popular.

Coffee bars were popular with the older set…..when the poetic/black turtlenecks and beret bunch began reciting poetry in public – my sister was in that bunch…..nine years older than me – we hung out in the soda shops though…

Mom says back in the day, soda fountains like that were most definitely a spot for romance.
