Thankful and Poetic Thursday

Happy Thankful and Poetic Thursday.    If you’d like to join us in being thankful – just click the badge above and link up!

My most important THANKFUL today is how very thankful I feel that I knew Wally from Island Cats who just passed away from kidney disease and other health issues.   He was an EPIC ginger guy who was loved by one and all.    Angel Sammy knew him better than I could have as they were Cat Scouts together whereas I was the “Johnny Come Lately” (or Teddy!) at Scouts.   Wally was a well loved cat through his blog, at Scouts, and most certainly his family.    I know Angel Sammy gave Wally a BIG HUG when he arrived at the gates to the Bridge.

Farewell Wally

As usual I’m also thankful that Angel Sammy’s email came through overnight even though we have icky winter weather with snow, ice and a mix of EVERYTHING………you never know how that will effect reception but we got his mail nonetheless!    Here it is.

Hello Fellow Poets and Fans of Poetry!!

I won’t repeat what my little brother said in his “Thankfuls” about Wally but just know that my heart was broken for his family but my heart was mended the minute Wally arrived here and I could hug him and welcome him to the Bridge for a well deserved rest.

Today we will be sharing poetry we wrote inspired by the photo I gave you last week…………which I thought was a brilliant copy of a painting by a favorite of mine and my Mom’s – Norman Rockwell.   I had fun with this one – did you?   I hope you wrote a poem to go with the photo.   If you did, let us know in comments!!

My Mom doesn’t garden like she used to but she would always get REALLY EXCITED when some little something popped up from the soil where she’d planted seeds.   Oh my.   Then it was “mothering” all those little seedlings until they made it to fully grown and producing flowers or fruit or vegetables or WHATEVER – – – and hopefully not becoming squirrel or deer food (which they often did).     Here’s my poem:

“Ya Gotta Come See!”

Poem by Angel Sammy Kimmell        February 20, 2019

Lookie, lookie, something has popped

My faith in my seeds has never stopped!

Little bundles of energy holding magical things

They pop out of the ground like they sprouted wings.

Then the REAL work begins – fertilizing, watering and such

Who knew a tiny seed would need so much!

Growing with vigor or shriveling up in the heat

Raising ANY crop was a herculean feat……….

But the agony faded away when the growing was done

As the harvest was enjoyed at a picnic under the setting sun……….

My Mom and Dad no longer have the energy to keep up with a big garden but in their gardening days – and before the trees began shading all the sunny spots for a garden – they had some beautiful zucchini, tomatoes, bush beans, radishes, lettuces, and other things that weren’t QUITE as successful.   But the point is they tried and succeeded and felt that pride gardeners feel – just like the man in the painting by Normal Rockwell.

Now – how about next week’s photo for inspiration?    How about this one?!

I love this photo.   Talk about a hard-core bingo player!  My Mom only went to a couple of bingo-fests along with her Mom many years ago and she said she spent the whole time “people watching”…….. So have some fun with this photo for your poem next Thursday and I’ll share mine with all of you at the same time.

Meanwhile, have a happy week………………….smile……………even if it’s a little hard to do sometimes…………….you will make OTHERS happy with your expression I promise!

I am the Angel Poet in the green beret…..and I hope you join me for POETIC FUN each week!

Love, Your Friend Always, Angel Sammy

♥♥♥

Thanks Angel Sammy!    I’ll look forward to hearing from you again next week.  In the meantime you know – feel free to visit me in my dreams.   You are my Guardian Angel and any advice you can give me is MUCH appreciated.

Wake me when the snow stops please!

Hugs, Teddy

  1. My bipeds get excited about new shoots appearing from the ground in the Spring. Also about buds opening on plants that were asleep all winter.

I hope your weather improves soon. Enjoy your nap!

  2. Another lovely poem, Angel Sammy. I used to grow lots of different vegetables too, but now it is only tomatoes in the greenhouse and strawberries in the raised bed outdoors.
Next week’s photo made me laugh. I had a beehive hairstyle too back in the 60s, but not wavy like that lady’s hairdo. I also had a cardigan just like that. I played Bingo a few times when my uncle took me to his Social Club, but I never really was interested in it.
I am very sad that Wally went to the Bridge, and now he has been joined by Sammy Meezer.

    • This time of year seems to bring more and more of our friends to the gates of the Rainbow Bridge. We are sad but also happy knowing that so many of their friends are there to welcome them. My Mom grows a tomato plant in a pot on our back deck every year but that’s about it. Strawberries would be fun – maybe we’ll have a hanging basket of those this year!!! My Mom never had a beehive in the 60s – she never really had enough hair to make it look right. LOL

Glad you liked Angel Sammy’s poem this week – we will be so happy to see some Spring here. We had three inches of snow yesterday and would LOVE to see some little sprouts coming out of the frozen ground!!! As for me – I’m growing alright – 22 lbs. and then some! HAHAHA

  4. I love this very descriptive poem. Gardening is a very wonderful and time consuming. We once had a small area at our first home. It was a constant battle keeping critters and weeds away.
Thank you as ALWAYS for finding such fun pictures

  5. Sweet picture of the gardener, and yes, Motor Mommy gets excited whenever she sees a sprout of anything (except a weed, of course!).
That is QUITE the interesting picture for next week: so much to look at in that one photo!

    • Your Motor Mom has a green thumb and you all have a beautiful yard – BUTTTT it does become a lot of work to maintain and that’s why my Mom has cut back garden areas. She used to have a LOT of things planted back when they first built the house but it’s just too much work for the old girl now (oops – did I say that out loud?????).

  6. I love the poem Angel Sammy and Teddy and Mom. I know how excited mom gets when something finally comes up around here. It’s a miracle each time we see the shoots coming up out of the ground. That next picture is fun to look at. Mom told me she’s never been to such an advent but she wishes she had because of all the stories she hears. XXXOOO Love you boys!

    • Glad you enjoyed Angel Sammy’s poem this week and we think next week’s photo will bring some whopper poems too!! My Mom loves seeing buds on trees and little things popping out of the ground (except for worms or snakes of course).

    • I have never been patient enough to start things from seed so I usually get “babies” from the nursery. But I’ve cut back a LOT on buying things I need to take care of in gardens….it’s too much work….!!! I have pots of things on my porch and deck and NOTHING planted in the yard. Way easier!!!

  7. wally will be missed by all. That was an excellent poem from Angel Sammy. That guy in the photo reminds me of my hubby. He already has seeds started indoors for onions and Brussel’s Sprouts. He is talking about cutting back on some things though because it is a lot of work and I am no help. Next week’s photo is a hoot. And I love the photo of you Teddy. XO

    • Your garden is BIG and I know it must be a lot of work – the time comes when it’s just TOO MUCH but you can always just grow your favorites and enjoy those. I know you do a lot of canning, etc. so you two (and your family) can enjoy the fruits of HIS labor all year long.

    • You could always grow a cherry tomato plant in a pot on the lanai……as long as it gets sun. There are lots of pretty plants down in Florida but you know I never remember seeing daffodils down there either!!! What’s with that?!?!?!

  8. We knew that Sammy would have another A+ poem. It is terrific! Mom’s never had really good luck with seeds, so she plants mostly bulbs. She says she’ll definitely need to do that next fall, as she hasn’t in several years. There was a story on the news yesterday about the police being called out to a retirement home to break up a fight between two Bingo players after a 79-year-old lady sat in the seat where an 86-year-old lady always sat. Mom said she might incorporate that in her poem. She did write a very small poem this week. You can find it at https://www.thecatonmyhead.com/awaiting-spring/

    • That’s a GREAT story about the two old bingo players. People are practically religious about bingo. I never “got it” but my Mom enjoyed it along with her bridge parties…..I suppose they have bingo tournaments SOMEWHERE but nowhere around here! We loved your poem – and I bet next week is gonna be FUN FUN FUN!

    • Mom grew some catnip last year just for funzies. I ignored it. WHAAAAAAAATTTT??????????? Yeah – it didn’t rock my boat – I sniffed, batted it, walked away and never showed any interest. Mom says maybe it was FAKE catnip. I say, bring on the silvervine!

  10. Great poem, Angel Sammy, and a nice precursor to Spring. No signs of Spring here with snow on the ground, and rain and snow coming in again this weekend. Mom would love to have a veggie garden too, but she says she is too old, and the deer and SomePup make is difficult:(

    • My Mom had to resort to the “tomato in a big pot” kind of garden on the deck. Too much trouble working the soil and doing all that maintenance. She DOES love her “own” tomatoes though so I expect we’ll have another one in a pot this year. The deer would eat anything we put in the yard though!

  11. We adored your poem Sammy. It is so true my friend. Mom is out there every morning to see how her seeds are doing in the Spring. When they pop through the soil, the real fun starts. Until the seed has reached a mature beautiful flower or mature veggie. Then mom stands back and admires the beauty of the moment.

I was devastated to hear of Wally’s passing. He was such a great Cat Scout and a happy kitty with his bro Ernie and Zoey, his sister. I’m sure Kali and Sammy are showing Wally around and having some wel deserved meows.

    • Hi Shoko……..I know that you help your Mom out in the garden – particularly keeping an eye on the catnip crop. I’m sure she appreciates that! Spring means things will begin popping up soon. We still have snow but pretty soon it will all be gone and it will SMELL like Spring again!!

  12. I actually played a lot of bingo back in the day. The only thing missing from that table is all of the lucky charms (And I don’t mean Lucky Strikes… I think she already has those accounted for). Some bingo players’ collection of critters they had to have with them on the table would put my Shelf to shame!

    • I remember that as a kid seeing all the “stuff” around those bingo players – kind of like you see in a casino with the “perpetual players” who move in with bags full of belongings because they literally LIVE at those stools plunking money into the machines. I bet this lady in the photo has some bags full of stuffies or snacks at her feet!!

    • Losing a cat friend or a human friend is sad but we believe that one day, we’ll all be reunited in some fashion so it’s not saying goodbye really but “see you again one day”…….still, when you’re a pet blogger, loss surrounds you – winter seems to be when most pets find it’s their “time”. Glad you liked the poem this week!

  14. I’m so sorry we’re always so late to visit! Wally will be missed, yet certainly remembered, by so many.

Angel Sammy, as always, your poem is purrfect for this fun image! My dad used to have a huge garden. He still has a garden, but he had to downsize it because gardening is no small feat. I myself am the farthest thing from a gardener.
