‘Allo Mon Amis!

SAMSELFIEAUG7-2016

It is moi….your friendly ginger poet back again with today’s poem in honor of the letter “T” !

There are a bazillion things that start with the letter “T” so deciding on just one to write my poem this week was tricky and tough………..but then the lightbulb lit over my little head and I realized that my “T” poem could only be about one thing.    I hope you like it!

“T”

Toes

by Sammy Kimmell, 10/27/16

When I was in the shelter

Just a little tiny baby

I kept seeing humans come into the cat room

I kept hoping and thinking “maybe” !

But not a soul was interested in me

They’d look and then they’d go

The shelter lady said it was because of my extra toes!

People thought I was deformed

Can you imagine that?

How silly can humans sometimes be

About a polydactyl cat!

She said I was a “Hemingway”

Which made me quite unique

I was healthy and very happy

And worth more than just a peek!

My Mom and Dad saw me that day

Mom knew about extra toes

She loved me the instant she saw me

My ginger fur and tiny pink nose.

My toes were just a bonus

Just much more of me to love……

I cuddled right up into her neck

And knew that I’d found LOVE.

(I was adopted by Mom and Dad on February 5, 2000 from the shelter)

Well now, that was fun to write – I’ve always been proud of my extra toes – wanna see some photos?   Of course you do…………….I’ve got a LOT of photos of my toesies!    Remember, next Thursday we will celebrate the letter “U”………………now that one will be a toughie!

  2. We love extra tosies. Our Angel Cousin Rufus had extra tosies. Also we read somewhere that sailors of olden times thought extra toed cats were lucky and would keep them on their ships! Love your poem

  3. Nothing wrong with an extra digit or two. There was a pitcher for the Florida Marlins back in the day named Antonio Alfonseca who had 12 fingers and 12 toes! The only drawback I see to an extra appendage is not really knowing which finger is the middle one…

  4. Sammy, that people who walked away as you were in the shelter were blind… If I would look for a kitty, the one with the hemingway paws would be THE ONE for me. I love your paws, they make you to a special cat… and your pawrents were the ones who noticed that immeow-diately… they have an eye for the special things of this world!!!

    • Thanks Easy! I think you’re right – the people who turned away from me at the shelter would have been NOT NICE to live with – the fact my parents fell in love with me the instant they saw me meant that they were THE ONES. Almost 17 years later that has proven to be TOTALLY TRUE!!!!

    • Oh how interesting! Shipcat makes a lot of sense because I think that’s how we arrived in the US originally – we were on board old sailing ships as pets and started a colony or two or three and now we are EVERYWHERE! The biggest single colony is still in Florida at Ernest Hemingway’s old homestead there – it’s a cat sanctuary and museum. Lots of descendants from Hemingway’s original polydactyl kitties still live there.

  5. Our Whiskers was a Hemingway Cat, we loved his extra toes. He could almost use them like a thumb. He managed to open lots of things for himself and Socks.

We forgot to do a poem, well we remembered but the Mom forgot but in honor of Socks we will attempt a short poem here.

    Tabby
Socks is a lovely grey striped tabby
He isn’t the least bit flabby
He doesn’t live in an abbey
but he has a friend named Abbie
You won’t catch him riding in a cabbie
    and he isn’t very gabby
    his coat isn’t shabby
He is just a purrfect tabby!

We will put Mom to work writing Unicorns for next week.

    • What a SUPER DUPER poem!!!! Whiskers sounds like he was a very clever guy who learned to use his thumbs quite well…..one thing I’ve found is easier is making a “scoop” with my paw to get a drink of water. With a thumb, you have a nice little “enclosed cup” in your paw so drinking like that is easy peasy! Thanks for writing a poem for Poetic Thursday -I’m looking forward to seeing your UNICORN one next week!

  6. We LOVED that poem, Sammy! Your extra toesies are so cute….well, all of you is cute! We are so fortunate to have found happy, loving homes, aren’t we? I know it was hard to wait at the shelter, but SO worth it for just the right folks to find you and fall head-over-heels in love with you!

  7. Sammy bless your sweet heart. My word humans can be so crazy…BUTTTT on the bright side your TOES lead you to your peeps hearts. I have a secret…shhhh…don’t tell my Dad’s middle two toes on one foot are twins. YEP My mom has a cousin with those toes on both feet twins and Dad had an uncle with twin toes. Dad was surprised that mom knew all about twin toes when the met. First thing out of mom’s mouth when my sis was born is does she have twin toes. LOL Mom really expected them to be twins.
Beautiful poem my handsome ginger friend!!

    • Twin toes is just as special as extra ones! I’ve never known of anyone with twins and I think that’s totally cool. All of us – animals AND peeps – are special in some way. Isn’t it GREAT? I’ll take a peekie at your toe poem today and thanks for playing along!

  8. We’re glad your Mom and Dad realized how special you are! We can’t imagine anyone who would think your extra toes were bad. When Mom met Dad he had a kitty named Fooz who had extra toes. Fooz was a cool cat and lived to be almost 21!

    • Gosh Miss Pix……I love you too and Mom says you are a super fabulous friend too and she’s right. I quite like my toes – Mom said it was the FIRST thing she noticed about me other than the fur on top of my head stuck straight up. Thankfully my baby hair gave way to nice sleek gingerness!!!!

Mom is thinking she might have to write an additional stanza. Thanks for challenging us each week. “U” is going to be really tough.
