Decent weather for a change! I'll be OUTSIDE more than IN today!
Ahhhhh! A breath of de-humidized air for a change…finally. Not that it’s perfect of course but it’s less hot and humid and I’m going to get to sit on my porch and walk on my sidewalk and maybe munch a little grass (if I can find any that is). I’m a happy guy.
Mom’s a lot happier too since she decided to stop worrying about her gardens…..we decided it was more important that the poor deer (especially the Moms and their babies) have something green and tender and yummy to eat, than it is to have pretty flowers. Aren’t we generous??? There seem to be a big bunch of baby deer this year – more than ever before. I worry so much about them because people drive around here WAY too fast and they don’t know to be careful. See? I’m just an old softie….! 🙂
Today is Mom’s grocery shopping day. Of course that means I’ll get a wider selection of breakfast items AND the birds and deer and squirrels will get a renewed supply of sunflower seeds. They sure do like those. Oh yeah – forgot the chipmunks – they like them too. They look pretty funny after they’ve crammed and jammed a big pile of seeds in their fat little cheeks and headed off to their burrows to stash them. They look like they have a TERRIBLE case of the mumps!
Guess I’d better go help Mom fill out that grocery list…..you know, make sure she puts all the “right” stuff on there……for me AND all the other critters around here.
A guy’s gotta do what a guy’s gotta do…………………….!

When I settled in here the sun was right where I wanted it! Why does it MOVE???!!
Hi Folks….Sam here….another day in paradise! I haven’t seen my nemesis Stevie yet this morning – she must be at her OWN house this morning or maybe hunting out in the woods. Mom has her snack ready if she ever DOES show up though. Meanwhile – guess what?! Mom and I were outside super early – me with my harness and leash (Mom calls it my sweater), and Mom with a cup of coffee. We went out the front door and all the way around the house while I checked everything out to make sure everything was in its place and smelled right! I know JUST where my yard ends so I made sure to mark the “borders” appropriately….ahem….so there’s no question by any other passing animals that Sammy Kimmell is the KING of this hill !
When we got to the back yard I sat down to watch the birds coming to the feeders and birdbath so Mom sat in a yard chair. By then it was light so Mom undid my leash. I saw something STRANGE coming up to the space under one of the feeders……Mom knew I’d seen something and came over to see what it was……guess what! Mom said it was something called a “groundhog” but to me it looked like a super huge mouse on steroids!!! We were maybe 20 feet away from it and either it didn’t see us or didn’t care we were there because the big fat thing just snuffled around on the ground and helped himself to sunflower seeds……some noisy old blackbirds landed near it and scared it off back down into the woods but it was neat to see something “different” at the all you can eat salad bar in the backyard!!!
Golly……there’s never a dull moment around here. I think before I curl up for my first nap of the day I’ll stand at the front door and keep an eye out for Stevie. When she arrives I always go find Mom wherever she is and tell her that Stevie’s here so she can give her her treat. A guy has to look out for his pet cat ya know!

Mom tried to get this photo before the deer heard her but it didn't work so well.....there was a Mom and her two little spotted babies eating sunflower seeds!
So this was our morning excitement….a Mommy and her two little babies helping themselves to our squirrel proof birdfeeders (which the squirrels figured out ages ago!!). Sunflower seeds seem to be the favorite food of ALL our creatures (except me of course).
We haven’t had any rain here in a looooooooong time, and things are drying up including all the greenery in the woods so the deer are up in the yard helping themselves to EVERYTHING. Mom calls her flower gardens “the all you can eat salad bar” because they LOVE the impatiens so much. At this point Mom says “let them eat whatever they want” – after all, without any rain, everything looks pretty pitiful anyway!
Except me of course……..I never look pitiful – unless I’m trying to get an extra helping of treats. Then I can look downright heartbreaking. Heh heh…..we cats are masters of communication when we WANT to be – including a wide variety of facial expressions to accompany our other forms of expression – like ankle biting, howling and yowling, chirping, and of course the old standby – hissing.
I have a feeling there will be a lot more deer wandering the yard today so I’ll keep an eye out from my vantage point on top of the couch at the big window into the backyard. Maybe I can even get Mom to take a DECENT photo of them to share with you. It’s tough to capture them on film because they are on the alert and Mom can’t sneak out to the deck without a bit of noise when she opens the door. I hope we get some rain soon – it might give the deer more green stuff to eat instead of just seeds. I worry about those little babies!!!
I’m just a softie……..of course I’m the most important bit of wild life around here but I DO worry about the wandering cats, the deer, and all other creatures…….makes me realize how great it is to be ONE SPOILED CAT.
