Thankful and Poetic Thursday

Standard

It’s another Thankful Thursday – and another chance to talk about how thankful we are here at my house.    Thankful because so far we’re outrunning the virus – doing the right things to keep all of us and each other safe.    My Mom had a regular checkup yesterday and her doctor told her that our County is doing REALLY WELL with doing the right things…..I think that’s what Mom and Dad would say based on what they see when they are doing the grocery shopping every Sunday……..and the rare occasion they go to WalMart for stuff they can’t get at the grocery.   People are very conscious about giving each other the proper space AND everyone is wearing a mask.

I’m also of course super thankful that Angel Sammy is with me 24/7 and watching out for us.    I just KNOW he is.    He’s also continuing to write to me every week with his poem and photo for next Poetic Thursday.    He said ALL the Angels are working overtime to keep their “on Earth” families safe.

Happy Thursday Poetry Lovers!

You might notice a difference in our Poetry Corner poster………….Teddy told me that I should be proud of my wings and halo as an Angel so instead of hiding them I’m letting it all hang out!

Hope you’ve all had a good week since we met here last.    I know you are all being super careful these days – we Angels are proud of you.   Keep up the good work.     Also I hope you  keep participating in our poetry get-togethers every week.     Just to remind you, below is the photo that I gave you to use for this week’s poem.    Did you write one?    Great – let us know in comments that you did and give us a link.    We want to read what you wrote!   Before I show you my poem, I wanted to give you the meaning of the word Geisha – which is what this beautiful woman in the painting is:

geisha is a traditional Japanese entertainer. Often confused with a courtesan, or a prostitute, geisha instead are known for their distinct make-up and attire, their elegant and graceful dance, and their demure conversation. Evolving in the mid-eighteenth century, from the pleasure houses of Japan where courtesans would entertain the samurai, the first geisha were actually men, who entertained the guests with drums and music. However, the men were gradually replaced with female dancers, referred to as geiko, who proved much more successful and popular. The term geiko is still used to refer to senior geisha who have passed all their exams; junior geisha still in training are called maiko.

“Graceful Beauty”

Poem by Angel Sammy Kimmell    ©July 8, 2020

Lovely lady so talented and bright

Won’t you entertain us this magical night?

Songs, dance and tradition light up your smile

How graceful and pleasant to have you with us for a while.

The ancient art of the Geisha is giving way to modern ways

But we hope the gentle beauty of Japan will always stay.

I love the colors in this painting of a Geisha.    The bright cherry blossoms and incredible colors are wonderful accompaniments to the dance of this traditional entertainer and just make her “pop” with personality.    She looks like she’s enjoying herself – which means those she entertains will enjoy watching her and having her company.

Now for next week’s photo…………..hope you will enjoy working with this one too!    I love Norman Rockwell paintings – they SAY SO MUCH……..what do you think is going on in the minds of the three in this photo???   Will make for fun poetry.

So I’ll see you next week – stay very safe and stay strong……………………..

I am the Angel Poet in the green beret…..and I hope you join me for POETIC FUN each week!

Love forever, Angel Sammy

♥♥♥

So wonderful to hear from you Angel Sammy………………..I’ll see you in my dreams!!

Hugs, Teddy

    • Thanks Kristiina – you’re right – the USA is in big trouble….some people just refuse to do the right thing….it’s a little frightening but in MY town in MY “world”, people ARE doing the right thing so we are for now safe. Thanks for the thoughts…….

    • Binky you and Granny did a masterful job of capturing the feeling of that beautiful painting we had for inspiration this week. Geisha are beautiful and Mom loves the design, color, patterns of the Far East – we thought this Geisha would inspire some wonderful poetry this week and we were right – there are many GREAT poems to read today!

      Hugs, Teddy 🙂

  1. That is a lovely poem for a beautiful lady, Angel Sammy.
When I was young I had a cloth bag just like the girl has to keep my allies in.
They are usually called marbles now so I googled to see if there was any difference. Allies are the glass ones and marbles used to be the clay ones. I had glass ones with different swirls inside. What would we do without Mr. Google!

    • Oh yes! I had a leather bag (my brother and I had the same bags) for our Allies. We called them all marbles but those swirly ones ALWAYS fascinated me and there were some in our collection that we had a great deal of competition over winning. Such fun days and memories……………..

    • I loved to play marbles with my brother. My own friends thought it as just a “boy thing” but I thought it was a SKILL thing and a challenge and we had so much fun!

    • Geisha is a fascinating part of the culture of Japan and a very ancient art – and it IS an art I believe. So involved and so much training – but the BEAUTY of it has always appealed to me. Not just the outfits which are stunning, but the concept and history. Far Eastern culture is really fun to learn – when I lived in Taiwan as a teenager I was more interested in having fun with friends than immersing myself in the world that was around me….I wish I could have a “re-do” !! Thanks for NOT passing on this poetic challenge……there’s a huge world out there and it’s fun to learn something new!

  3. That is really something to be thankful for, T. It’s tough to be at the mercy of everybody to stay safe in this pandemic. Teamwork makes the dream work. Prayers that we all stay safe till it’s over.

    • Love that saying dear Cupcake……..”Teamwork makes the dream work” because if we don’t do this as a team and care about everyone as much as we do ourselves – we will lose the war.

  5. Angel Sammy you sure did capture the beauty of this picture with your poem. You and Mom find the most amazing pictures…and I thank you for challenging me each week.
I sure do wish I could say our county is doing as well as yours. Wake Co is huge I’m guessing 3 or 400,000.For the last few days we have had over 1,000 new cases each day. Of course there is more testing going on.
Next week’s photo will be fun.

    • We really love Poetic Thursday as much as those of you who participate do. It stretches our imaginations and that’s GOOD for us all! I’m sorry your County isn’t doing well but it’s sort of all relative really….for instance, our County has a LOT of wide open spaces, horse farms, huge estates, lots of open fields……….not a lot of heavy population – mostly small towns. The further into DC you go though the more concentrated things get – Mom and Dad haven’t gone into town in YEARS. We hope everyone gets through these tough times unscathed! That is our prayer!

  6. Sammy, we really like your new badge and will start using it next week. Those wings and halo are definitely badges of honor. The Geisha painting is so gorgeous. Mom and Dad have a lot of art and decorative pieces from Japan, as both Dad Tom and his dad traveled to Japan multiple times. Angel Sammy’s poem described it perfectly. Mom did write a poem. It can be found at https://www.thecatonmyhead.com/a-place-to-dream.
Mom and Dad also saw a wonderful Norman Rockwell exhibit at our museum a couple of years ago. Do kids still play marbles? Somehow, we doubt it! Mom will really have to put her thinking cap on for that one. Try to stay cool. It is already a super hot day. Love to all! • Actually I think that some kids DO still play marbles and jacks….some of those old things sort of got a revival. My Mom has a beautiful filmy robe with Japanese designs on it that was her Mom’s – but that’s about it. When she lived in Taiwan Mom took calligraphy lessons from a Japanese lady and also learned to paint in that amazing oriental way with the black ink stick on rice paper. Sadly all those paintings were ruined when my Mom’s Mom stored a big chest of her treasures in a basement where there was a huge flood. All ruined. We loved your poem and all the poems we’ve read today have been AMAZING.

    Loved your Poem!

And Norman Rockwell, sure could get expressions for real! When we were youngsters, ca 1960’s we played marbles, too and collected/traded them.

  11. A lovely poem and picture, Angel Sammy! I don’t need to tell you how fortunate you are that your numbers are low and that people are adhering to the suggestions that will keep us healthy. Our county remains low in numbers for cases. Local people are being very good about masks and distancing. The problem for us is vacationers who continue to come here and not quarantine and do not wear masks. A mask is such a little thing to do to keep us safe.

    • It’s so frustrating I’m sure to see all the “snowbirds” down there ignoring the things that we already know EVERYONE should be doing. They are “importing” problems to Florida – that makes my Mom mad too – for all her friends AND her family down there. You’re right about a mask being such a little thing to do to protect themselves AND others!!!!!!
