Thankful and Poetic Thursday

Standard

Thursday already?   Well that just shows you that it’s true that TIME FLIES.    Seems like yesterday we were here being thankful and poetic together doesn’t it.    I guess I’m thankful today that we’re starting to see signs of Spring.   Buds on trees mostly and Mom says she sees some buds on the azaleas getting ready to pop.    The bradford pears along the driveway will soon flower and that means “white rain” – we have HUGE trees and when they flower all those white petals are like snow – they cover the driveway from top to bottom and we have a 500+ foot driveway!    The grass is starting to grow so when I’m outside “grazing” I finally have a bit of taller green stuff to munch.    So all in all – I’m a happy boy and THANKFUL for Spring.

We’re also thankful Angel Sammy’s poem arrived in time to share with you………………..here’s his EMAIL from the Rainbow Bridge.

Hello Fellow Poets!   Time to “get poetic” !

Thursday’s back and so am I.    It’s time to share some poetry based on the photo I gave you last week to THINK about.    It’s a lot of fun to allow a photo to inspire us isn’t it?    It’s also nice that there are so many poetic forms you can use……….rhyming or non-rhyming…..short or long or in between.    It’s up to you to write what you FEEL when you see the photo.

Here’s the photo I gave you for today followed by my poetic effort …………….

“Adventure Awaits”

Poem by Angel Sammy Kimmell      ©March 11, 2020

Granny said I could go through the door

I was old enough now and I need wait no more

I wondered what treasures had been kept from me

I’d been held captive and was about to be free!

Closed garden doors I just knew held some magic

To be kept from exploring was – for me – quite tragic

So today was the day I was permitted this pleasure

Behind the old door was bound to be treasure

Granny unlocked the door with a huge golden key

It creaked open so slowly and quite noisily

“From now on my boy, all the choices you make

Will depend on the choice of which path you will take”

Before me were ancient trees as high as the sky

Several paths into the woods ahead did I spy

“You may choose an easy path to a future that is bright

Or a path blocked with walls that is dark as the night

Some paths have dead ends and you must start all over

One might lead you to a field full of lucky clover

The path will take you to your future so choose wisely my son

You’ll return to this door when your life’s adventure is done.”

The door shut, I took a breath, and I decided which path I’d choose

As long as I believed in myself – I knew I could NOT lose.

Wow – that was a  longer than usual poem but I needed it to be to get where I wanted to go with it.    I also wanted to tell you about a favorite painting my Mom used to do when she used to paint and draw some years ago.    The painting was just a little one – sometimes just a 5×7″ pen and ink with watercolor…….and she would paint one for a friend who was maybe going through a tough time, or worried about something, or unsure of the future – it was just a friendship gesture and each was slightly different but were JUST LIKE the artwork for the poem today – a door on a wall with vines around it.   Nothing more……..just a door.     With each door she painted and sent was this rhyme (which she still keeps as a memento of her poetry days):

“This door is just a symbol
Of what? Well you decide…
A door to the past or future
Or to a place to hide?
Or to a land unknown as yet
Adventure beyond the wall…
Or just a quiet place to sit
And forget about it all.
I’m giving you this door today
Because you are my friend
Remember life is full of doors
To explore until life’s end.”

The door painting we chose last week for inspiration for you was amazingly like the doors she used to paint for her friends………………….so much so that it was quite strange for her to see it.    Remember life is full of doors for all of us.    Our choice of doors can lead us ANYWHERE.    Life is an adventure.

Now here’s your photo for NEXT week!

I love this photo……………. I think a lot of people would like to be isolated on a sunny beach right about now……………………..to me it looks like one great big litterbox!    Also at the Rainbow Bridge it is sunny all the time!   Lucky us!

Have a good week poets – we’ll share next week OK?

I am the Angel Poet in the green beret…..and I hope you join me for POETIC FUN each week!

Love, Angel Sammy

  1. I would love to know what is beyond that door and explore it’s many secrets. Love the poem, Angel Sammy.
Also, I would love to be in that hammock right now instead of looking out of the window at the rain.

  2. I really enjoyed reading about your mother and her gifts to friends who needed the analogy. I enjoyed the words she sent with it and Sammy, you really did a superb job with your poem. XO

    • We really love your poem – Mom remembers when faerie gardens were an “in” craft project and she always MEANT to make one but never did. Doors are a symbol of possibilities – of ALLLLLLLLLL kinds. I think that’s why she’s always been fascinated by doors of all shapes and sizes. It’s a FIRST IMPRESSION when someone comes to your home so kind of important!

    • I’ve always written and loved poetry – it just seemed natural to have it as a feature in my blog….and it’s a lot of fun to find photos to use as inspiration. Thanks for joining in that fun – I love your poem!

  6. Sammy’s poem was wonderful. Our lives truly are a sequence of doors from which to choose. We’d love to see one of your mom’s door paintings if she still has any. Next week’s photo reminds Mom of her favorite vacation locale in Tortola. She fears she will never see it again. She did write a small poem this week, which can be found at: https://www.thecatonmyhead.com/the-secret-door-thankfuls/

    • We loved your poem – keep the faith about travelling again. My Mom is! Mom said she’s thinking about maybe doing a few “door” paintings for friends………one of these days you might just get one.

  7. Teddy, we are so glad you’re getting a taste of spring! We have some flowers blooming, but they got covered in snow this weekend. That’s melted away now, though, and we hope the snow is done until way later this year. Angel Sammy, we love your poem that goes so perfectly with this magical image! I think finding and opening a door like this would be wonderful. Purrs!

    • Who knows what’s behind a closed door – sometimes it’s a wonderful surprise and sometimes…….it’s a chance for something new! We have a bit of spring here – green grass and the pussy willows are blooming but that’s about it!
