Thankful and Poetic Thursday

Standard

Greetings on a Thursday!  It’s Thankful Hop day with Brian and you can join in if you’d like to by clicking the badge above and filling out the linky form.   We always join (unless Mom forgets what day it is!).

We are super thankful this week for all the little things.    Every day there are blessings that befall most of us and we hardly give them a thought – but they happen and become part of our “background” not drawing any particular attention to themselves.   But they ARE blessings and if you think about your “normal” day and all that happens, you too will find that you’ve experienced blessings that are almost ROUTINE to you.    Recognizing your blessings for what they are is a GREAT feeling.

I’m also very blessed in that my Angel brother Sammy sent me his poetry for this week which I am sharing with all of you.    If you’ve never joined us in writing a poem based on the photos Angel Sammy gives to us every week, why not let THIS be your first try at it?   You might just get hooked on it……..poetry is fun.

♥ ♥ ♥

Let’s Get Poetic!

Happy Thursday friends……………time to share some poetry.    You know how this works by now – I give you an “inspirational” photo to study and think about for a whole week then the following Thursday we share the poems we’ve written based on the photo!   Easy?   Well it really is……….poetry is not hard to write – it doesn’t even have to rhyme – it just has to tell a story or relate a feeling you felt when you saw the photo.

Here’s the photo I gave you LAST Thursday to use for THIS Thursday – and if you wrote a poem, please tell us you did in comments here and give us your  link – we want to read your poetry!!

“My First Wheels”

Poem by Angel Sammy Kimmell      ©February 19, 2020

“Get rid of that old truck” my Mom would say

“That ugly old thing has had its’ day!”

But she didn’t understand what that truck meant to me

My first wheels transported me from point A to B

I took my girl out for our very first date

We fell in love and she became my mate

The truck took us to the hospital for the birth of my son

The three of us traveled in it everywhere and had so much fun

It took us to drive-in movies, to parties, dances and church

Always reliable was my old truck it never left me in the lurch

My son learned how to drive it and loved it like I had

He even wrote to me to check on it when he was stationed near Baghdad

I drove it to his funeral when he’d been killed in the war

That’s when the magic left – I loved that truck no more

It had become quite rusty yet I couldn’t quite give it away

So I parked it back in the woods and that’s where it would stay

Mother Nature is reclaiming the truck and making it disappear

She may have the truck but all my memories remain quite clear………..

OK so cats don’t own trucks – I know – but I imagined this little story and it was the first kind of thing I thought when I saw the photo.    Someones old truck, abandoned and being reclaimed by Mother Nature.    Then I just put a story around it.    Did you write a poem?   I hope so – GOOD for you if you did.

Here’s your photo for NEXT week’s photo challenge……….I hope you’re up for it!

Ah ha!  Something different right?    Well see what you can come up with and so will I !!   Meanwhile, I hope you have a wonderful week – if you try you CAN make it a wonderful week I promise.

I am the Angel Poet in the green beret…..and I hope you join me for POETIC FUN each week!

Love, Angel Sammy

    • I know you must have been sad to see the elephant skate go – you had a lot of great adventures with that car and maybe some not so great adventures (!) but I totally understand MISSING a car. When my Dad died and I got his Cadillac I felt incredibly special for the years I had it – it fit me like a glove – I was “with” him when I drove it. Giving it up was so hard to do. Cars are a BIG PART of us!!!!

      • When my Dad died, I got his Chevette. It had been his..ithe seat was moulded to him and that made it more special. He came down here to visit us in it…it had lasted him a goodly time. I asked to have the car as my part of the estate. I cherished having it. IT was tearful to give it up on farther down the road. Still have his fave flannel shirt too.

        • Oh Carole I have a wool vest that was my Dad’s AND the heavy sweater he got when we lived in Weisbaden, Germany when I was four. Some things you simply cannot give up – I bet you miss his car like I miss my Dad’s. My favorite true story about Dad’s Cadi is that whenever I would start the engine and the radio came on, “Unforgettable” by Nat King Cole would come on the radio – his favorite song.

    • That diversity is what makes having a poetry day so much fun – each individual “sees” and “feels” different things from almost ANY photo – capturing that feeling in words is what poetry is all about when you use a photo for a reference. This week we have some WONDERFUL poetry and yours was a lot of fun!!

    • Sammy always had a knack for poetry even before he left us for the Bridge. This week’s photo was a fun one to write a poem for – the poetry we’ve read from everyone so far has been super good. Next week’s will be fun too!

  2. Angel Sammy, I wasn’t expecting that! It really made me stop and think, and that is what poetry should do. Powerful and thought provoking, and it even gave me a lump in my throat as I read further down.

  3. We bet that old truck holds lots of wonderful memories inside. It reminds Mom of an old car her uncle left in the backyard when she was a little girl. She used to like to climb inside it and play with her dolls.

    • Old cars were a lot of fun to play in – I remember that too. In fact, we lived across from a heavy woods and deep inside was an old airplane – now THAT was truly a fun “playhouse” !!
