Hello Monday again AND it’s almost Christmas! Time to SPARK………………What exactly IS this Monday SPARK thing we do? Well, most of you know that Annie of McGuffy’s Reader – who started SPARKS – was hacked and has been on an extended break from blogging although her idea to spread some inspiration on Monday of every week goes on. Many of us who participated in her SPARKS Blog Hop and found value in sharing a thought on Monday continue doing that to hopefully give each other a “Monday boost” – perhaps something to think about to inspire us in the week ahead OR help us deal with something that’s on our mind. Why not join us by sharing something that SPARKS you? It might just start a spark in us too.
Of course on this Monday before Christmas I wanted to have a Christmas-related inspiring thought to share……………….I found it almost immediately and it was a quote from one of my favorite people EVER. I think you’ll like it – and I think you’ll say “YES – that’s it!” when you read it.
It’s a quote by Bob Hope. A million years ago I saw Bob Hope perform in downtown D.C. and it was one of the best shows ever – he told stories from his “entertaining the troops” days, sang songs that I’d heard as a girl growing up (because my Dad loved Bob Hope too and had his records), and was the consummate entertainer in every way. My boss at the time who was the President of Mutual Radio Broadcasting couldn’t use the tickets he had for the show, so had given them to lucky me. At the very beginning of the show that night, Bob Hope said to the crowd that he wanted to introduce some special people in the audience – there were a couple of big-wig politicians, another celebrity in town to make a movie, then he said MY NAME. He told everyone that his friend (my boss) couldn’t make it but had given the tickets to his secretary – ME and he asked me to stand up! Can you imagine how my legs shook as I stood? It was the only time in my life that I’ve ever felt like a celebrity myself – even if it was for sixty seconds. HAHAHA It was a kind thing of my boss to do and a KINDER thing that Mr. Hope did by recognizing me in the audience. That was fifty years ago. Time flies.
Speaking of time flying – remember how when you were little it seemed like it took FOREVER for Christmas Eve to get here and Santa would be coming? I sure do. Now I have to say that I’m amazed at how it seems like last week that we had the last Christmas celebration – time is strange as we age. BUT one thing hasn’t changed – I really do still feel like a kid when it comes to Christmas!
That must have been amazing to see a legend like Bob Hope.

I would LIKE to have been invited backstage or something but as it was, I was in total shock when he introduced me (and people clapped?!?!?!?!) – maybe I was more famous than I thought I was back then. HAHAHA My Dad particularly thought a lot of him and I just LOVE those old movies of his he did with Bing Crosby.

Oh to have met Mr. Hope! I loved his shows and of course, only on the radio as we could never get to where he was. While lived overseas we got to listen to AFN and heard a zillion of his and Jack Benny’s radio shows. I loved them. I was so young when they were originally on,I never understood the comedy that zillion years ago. But even my children love both of the men’s comedy and we have tapes of their shows. They were my parents “love” and became mine as I got old enough to understand the shows. As Mr. Benny used to say, “Jello, everybody”!

Both of them were amazing comedians and SO talented. I was very fortunate really. David and I always listen to Sunday night “Old Time Radio” on one of the local radio stations. We get a lot of Jack Benny programs, old Gunsmoke, Dragnet – Johnny Dollar. It’s wonderful to hear the old shows and voices of the stars of the era. The “good old days” really WERE!!!

It was – it was not a HUGE venue either – so it didn’t feel like we were in the middle of a million people. He was amazing – what stories he told……I will obviously never forget it – it’s been over 50 years and I’m still telling the tale!

We remember Bob Hope and watching his shows and thinking of just how wonderful a performer he was and how the feeling came right through the small screen. And they were small in those days. We wish we would have seen him live. Thanks for a great spark

Terrific Spark, and that was a delightful story, Pam. What a special moment for you, Pam. As kids we only had to wait for Christmas, so time dragged. Now, as the grownups, we have so much to do, it is hard to enjoy the holidays. Baking for me today. Sending lots of love to all from me and the Kitties Blue Crew. Dad Tom too!

Glad you liked my “Hope” story. There were a lot of awful things about that job but some of the perks were GREAT. You’re right – when we’re little and all we’re doing is enjoying the excitement of Christmas things are pretty uncomplicated. THEN we grow up and have to arrange and cater holiday parties, buy presents galore, do all the decorating in the house, keep the kids or our pets entertained so they don’t bug us to bits, AND all of that while looking perfectly perfect from head to toe. FORGETABOUTIT! I’m eliminating some of that stuff to make holidays easier – only did a couple of baking projects this year – no parties – just having four people for Christmas Day dinner……..but what helped me the most was doing stuff EARLY so I didn’t have any last minute stuff dragging me down! We all hope you all have a PERFECT Christmas – I’m SURE you will.
Love, Pam and Teddy (and David too)

Bob Hope was so right. Many years ago, the mom was out in California and she and some friends got tickets to see the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson (remember him?). As part of the show, they got to be part of the audience for Bob Hope’s monolog for one of his specials they were taping. It was really good. Bob Hope is a legend.
