Thankful and Poetic Thursday

Standard

Happy Thursday!    It’s time to think about what we’re thankful for – although if you’re like we are here, we are thankful every single day for one OR MORE things!   Anyway, anyone who would like to join up with Brian’s hosted Hop – just click the badge above and link up with us.

I’m super thankful that Mom and Dad are finished decorating the Christmas tree and house.   All that noise and rummaging around in boxes and bags – it certainly makes napping difficult.   One super good thing about it is that the “under the tree” new Lionel Christmas Train Dad got looks VERY cool under our tree.    I don’t particularly care for all the noise it makes with bells, whistles and a conductor announcing the stations BUT it is fun to watch it go round and round if Dad isn’t making it do all those effects with the remote!     I enjoy lying under the tree snoozing…….nice!

I did get an email from Angel Sammy with his poem for today – another reason to be THANKFUL.   I always love seeing his poems on Thursdays!

♥♥♥

Greetings Poetic Friends!

Time for us to get together and share the poems we have written this past week based on the photo I gave you LAST Thursday.    So much fun – I so enjoy reading your poems and I’m pleased that several of you have taken up that challenge and joined in the fun writing a poem once a week inspired by a photo.    If you wrote a poem and would like to share it – please let us know in our COMMENTS that you have a poem and give us your link so we can read it – OR you can write your poem in our comments if you prefer.

Here’s the photo I gave you last week – followed by my own poem.

“Closet Space”

Poem by Angel Sammy Kimmell    ©December 4, 2019

Clothes, shoes, blankets and bags all over the place

We’re always running out of closet space!

Apartments here are ever so small

Sleeping bags line every single wall!

Student housing – there’s never enough

Five of us in a one bedroom apartment with lots of stuff

The only problem that causes us all some pain

Is bringing it all back inside whenever it rains!

A short poem but it was the first thing that came to my mind when I saw this photo.    A little bit about this photo though from my Mom – she lived in Taiwan for two years and in a very crowded downtown housing area it was not at all unusual to see this sight – nobody had enough room – and often the closet in the apartment was OCCUPIED by a family member as a bedroom (!) so clothes were hung up on the balcony to save space.    Whole families would live in a small apartment so space was definitely at a premium and a closet was more of a “private bedroom” than a place for clothes.    Mom didn’t live downtown – she lived with other American service families up on a mountain in a military compound BUT she went to school in downtown Taipei and the bus drove through areas on the way to school that looked much like this (only not this large of a building).     Interesting photo though isn’t it?    A bit mind-boggling!!!

So – are you ready to see the photo I found for you for next week?????

BRRRRRRRRR…………..just looking at this photo makes me cold.   Thankfully, it’s NEVER cold here at the Rainbow Bridge – always perfect – day after day.    Just one of the PERKS we have here – it’s nice for sure but not as nice as if we were back home with you!

I am the Angel Poet in the green beret…..and I hope you join me for POETIC FUN each week!

See you next week!   Write a poem to share – we’ll do that next Thursday OK?

Love, Angel Sammy

Purrfect Angel Sammy……we’ll see you next week for sure……sending love to you.

Hugs, Teddy

  1. OhMyGosh I could not live like that! I wasn’t even sure about marriage because I need my space and a bathroom all my own. I am just quirky like that. That is why I hope there is no reincarnation cause that’s a nightmare! Good poem though Angel Sammy! Teddy, being thankful for the choo choo and napping under the tree are good thankfuls.

    • We love you and we love quirky so this works for us (!!!!!!). It’s quite a photo isn’t it? My Mom likes her own space too and likes things to be “just so” (although she was more flexible when she was younger!). I’ll post some photos soon of our tree and stuff and of course MEEEEEEEE under the tree!

  2. I sure am glad your Mom explained that situation to me. I couldn’t imagine why all those clothes were out there on those balconies!! Great poem, once again, Angel Sammy. And “Teddy Claus”, I hope your Mom takes a picture of you under the tree with the train!
That’s a cool picture for next week’s poem; I’m going to start working on that one right away! Thanks, Pam, for hosting this little challenge each week!

    • Love your poem – it was a lot of fun figuring out what kind of poem to write to go with this photo wasn’t it? I love the photo for next week – icy cold feeling there – boats just WAITING for Spring………

Thanks for playing along with us every week – I told you that you’d have fun (!!).

  3. You darling boy, Angel Sammy. Precious through and through.
Mom said she has lived in places while abroad that definitely made her regroup her thinking. She was not comfortable sometimes but she gained more of an appreciation for her life in America.

    • Katie that’s just what my Mom said………she realized too when they lived in Taiwan for two years that we take a lot of things for granted……they had no fresh milk for two years, no TV (although they listened to Armed Forces Radio!) – many things that were available everywhere else they’d lived which weren’t available there. Anyway, it sometimes does make you appreciate what you HAVE and where you LIVE when we travel!

          • We saw a lot of that in Taiwan too…..and bamboo – the other thing that we really hated to see was back int he 60s (I’m sure it’s no longer the case!) there was no underground sewer system in downtown Taipei (capital city) – so open sewers and people just did whatever they had to do when nature called. My Mom spent the first week there crying about what she saw out the hotel window where we were before we got assigned quarters!!!!!

    • Well we just THINK that’s what’s going on in that photo – don’t know for sure – when you find photos on the internet sometimes they have no explanation….but Mom HAD seen similar things when she lived in Taiwan and MAYBE that’s the explanation. At any rate, I bet those people scramble a lot when it rains! HAHA

  7. Angel Sammy, your poem made me completely rethink the images in your photo. I had assumed it was laundry day! I cannot imagine having to live like that where the only available space for clothes is on the balcony.
Teddy, are we going to see some photos of you and the train? Silly question, of course we will!

    • YES YES YES I will have photos of me and the choo choo – Mom wants to get some wrapped presents under there too THEN take pix. She has a couple of me under the tree with no presents and the tree looks VERY LONELY!

  8. Oh, Teddy Claus, how cute you look. So interesting about your mom’s memories of living in Taipei. Our poem says something similar to yours, but in a haiku. Here it is: Clothes sway in the breeze
Do all these flats lack closets
    Or is it wash day?
All the original closets in our house are only big enough to be a bedroom or a cat, unless the person was willing to stand upright, back against the wall to sleep. MOL!
Next week’s photo gave Mom goosebumps just looking at it.
Teddy, we were wondering how you would feel about all the noises the new train makes. Hope your dad does not use the emote when you are under the tree.

    • Dad hasn’t used the remote when I’m under the tree yet but I do tolerate him doing it when I’m around! Mom says if he does it while I’m under she will NOT be happy – and we all know that when Mom isn’t happy – NOBODY IS HAPPY – right? We loved your poem for this week’s photo – there were some GREAT poems this week.

    • My Mom says it’s just a little tougher to do all that decorating as the years go by…..she said “getting old isn’t for old people” – I’m still trying to figure that one out!

  9. We remember your Mom writing about how much Angel Sammy loved the train under the Christmas tree. It’s nice you are carrying on the tradition.

  10. That is very interesting about the clothes being hung due to a lack of inside space.

We hope you will post a photo of video of your tree with that magical train underneath.
