Thankful and Thoroughly Poetic Thursday

Standard

Happy Thursday!   It’s HOP time and we have a chance to share all the things we are thankful for this past week.    If you want to Hop along – click the badge above and link to Brian then SHARE!

We had a BIG day yesterday – I was in hiding most of the day while three trucks full of worker bees were here installing a brand new Heat Pump in our attic.    We have a two-system house (whatever that means) and the furnace was fine but heat pump was “shot” (yikes – that does sound bad).    SO, they had to take apart the old one up in the attic then get it down through a little hole in Mom’s office ceiling – then town two flights of stairs and out to their truck.   I guess they were taking it to the HEAT PUMP GRAVEYARD somewhere.    Then they had to bring in the new one and take it up all those stairs and get it into the attic to install it.   They had to redo all the ductwork too because the previous installation had been done wrong.    ANYWAY, bottom line is I had to stay out of the way and I didn’t like the noise.   I had to forego all my usual activities because we’d been INVADED.    My favorite spots weren’t QUIET.    I wasn’t a happy boy.    TODAY I’m HAPPY and I’m very very very very THANKFUL that it’s over and done.     My parents are too.

As always I’m also thankful that Angel Sammy didn’t forget to send me his poem for this week…………and a new photo for us to use for next week’s poetry too!

Hello Poetry Readers and Writers!   Today’s our day to share!

That’s right – today we’ll share with each other our efforts to write a poem about a photo that I give you once a week to study.   You have a whole week to think about it and come up with a poem – short/long, any format – and on Thursdays we SHARE!    Did you write one?   If you did, let us know in comments OK?

Things have been busy at the Bridge.   Not quite as many partings as last month but our Bridge Welcoming Committee is always available and ready to welcome those who are going to rest up before returning for another of their nine lives.     We are like the ultimate B&B !    I had plenty of time to write my poem though so let’s get on with it.    Here’s the photo from LAST week that we all used for our poems this week.    I had a lot of you comment on this photo after I showed it to you – that you loved it and were inspired by it so let’s see what you did with it!!

“A Little Privacy”

Poem by Angel Sammy Kimmell      March 13, 2019 ©

The stuffy house party and shuffling servants

Helped to make some present not too observant

So the housekeeper and footman took their leave

A few moments of cool quiet – a valued reprieve

So many ears around in the kitchen and halls

Made conversation stunted listening for footfalls

Outside in the snow there were no distractions

The housekeeper and footman could pursue their attraction

When she became too chilled to continue the walk

They turned to come back and pursued their talk

Agreed upon liaison on their next free day

Would allow them the freedom to follow love’s way.

I really was intrigued by this artwork.    You can look at it closely and see little things that take your imagination down very different paths every time.   The fact the fence is broken on the left side like something fell through it…….the fact she has no gloves on nor a shawl on a snowy walk…….the fact it looks a bit like he has stopped and is beginning to turn around and go back but she appears to be resolutely continuing on.    He looks to be holding something in his hands….or is he?     Fascinating.   Anyway, that’s why sometimes photos like this make for very interesting poetry.

Now, would you like to see what I’ve found for us to use as inspiration for next week’s Poetry fun?

Let’s see what we can all come up with for this one………my Mom would say “I wish I could live there”……………….and in fact when she and my Dad were on a trip and took a canal cruise in Amsterdam they saw many houseboats that looked just like this one and she said that THEN too!

Good luck writing your poem.    Remember, you don’t have to be an accomplished poet to write a poem…….you just have to be able to say what you feel.   Sometimes it’s easier to do that on paper than it is to say it out loud.

Have a super week everyone……………………we at the Bridge are hoping you do!

I am the Angel Poet in the green beret…..and I hope you join me for POETIC FUN each week!

Love forever, Angel Sammy

♥♥♥

Thank you Angel Sammy.    I like your poem this week and the photo for next week?   I think it would be a ton of fun to live on one of those………..maybe I can talk Mom and Dad into doing that?    No?   You think not?  You’re probably right………..50 years ago they would have though!

Hugs, Teddy

  1. you wrote it like it really is… sometimes we have to leave a crowded pawty to take a deep breath outside and to reload our batteries without distraction and noises… and then we are ready to stand such events till the end… whenever it finds and end LOL

    • You’re right about parties – sometimes they go on much longer than WE want them to! LOL My Mom fell in love with this photo when she saw it. So many “scenes” through her brain I think!

    • Oh yes! I remember reading about the cat shelter houseboat. I really just loved the little tour we took on the cruise boat through the canals – it was fun seeing the houseboats up close and the hustle and bustle that is Amsterdam. One of our favorite parts of the trip we were on!

  2. I’m glad your heating is fixed!

I hope the housekeeper and footman’s romance works out better than Miss D’s dates have so far. I have my paws crossed that the next date is better for her.

    • Clowie we are also hopeful – Miss D might be happier though if we just left her to her own devices…..or maybe she just wants to “stay in the kitchen” and create Ding Dong School masterpieces for lunch?!?!

  4. Our air handler (emergency heat and regular heat) is up in a drywalled space above one of our bedroom closets. Craziest thing I have ever seen. Why the heck do they put them up there? Hard to work on them and it gets hot up there! Glad peace has been restored to your favorite spots, Teddy. I bet your Mom is glad to have the house back, too.
Very interesting with your observations about the picture, Teddy’s Mom. You have me taking a second and third look at it. Maybe they had words and she went out the door with just her umbrella and… or maybe he didn’t want to walk in the cold and snow anymore and he stopped… maybe they think someBODY went through the fence!
Oh! I could be so happy in that houseboat, too!
Good Morning! Geez, I got lots to say this morning… I’m gonna zip it up! I’m sending you an email!

    • In our case the heat pump is UP because it’s taking care of the top floor of our house while the furnace does main floor and basement. I guess if we’d had heat pump on the main floor it not have had to be in the attic. The company that did our install said they are “used to it”…….lots of heat pumps on upper floors. They just took it all apart up there and brought the old one down in pieces – then took the new one up in pieces too. Amazing what they can do!!!! I love that painting – so many interesting details to see……!!!!!

    • The houseboats are quite interesting. All manner of them….”wrecks” and incredibly gorgeous ones – old ones and modern ones. Price of occupying a house on land is so expensive many resort to canal living. Interesting!

  5. Great poem for last week’s photo, Angel Sammy! That is a mesmerizing pic. Love the one for next week, too. Can you imagine being rocked to sleep every night by the movement of the water??
Glad it’s a quieter day for you today, sweet Teddy!

    • Once many years ago David and I went to the Eastern Shore for our First Anniversary and stayed on a “Boat B&B”. It was called “Casablanca” and was appropriately “themed”. The night spent below deck in the cabin was truly like being rocked to sleep – the sound of the water and the gentle sway of the boat – magical. Then breakfast was made on board the next morning by the owners – we loved them – they were just so kind and attentive but left us plenty of privacy too. It would be wonderful to do a canal boat journey – maybe in England………..

  6. Having workers in the house is always upsetting. Excellent poem from Angel Sammy. He must have watched Downton Abbey with your mom. I can picture Mr. Bates and Anna out for a walk. 🙂 Next week’s poem looks like fun, I like the blue house. Have a great day! XO

    • We are pretty sure we saw THIS houseboat when we were in Amsterdam on a canal cruise and the brightly colored houses were so gorgeous. That blue is great isn’t it???!! As I recall, Sammy did spend some evenings with us watching Downton Abbey when it was first broadcast. It put him to sleep but David and I were glued to the set!!

  7. Sammy, your poem is wonderful and so imaginative. When Mom first saw the photo it reminded her of the series, “Victoria,” which she and Dad watch on PBS, and which she really likes. She thought at first about writing about Victoria’s sister, who was probably up to one of her misdeeds in this photo, but her brain was on “freeze” mode yesterday. We think the man has ruffles at the end of his sleeves, and it looks as if he has a hanky in his right hand. Maybe the lady had been crying. And we thought that maybe the fence was broken by a horse when the lady or gentleman were out riding. I bet we could write a dozen different poems about this. We really do love poetry day! Teddy, your photo at the end is darling, and you are a love bug. Next week’s looks wonderful. Mom has always thought it would be fun to live on a houseboat. So, we have a puny little haiku fo this week. It is at: https://thecatonmyhead.com/thoroughly-poetic-thankful-thursday/

    • Glad you liked Angel Sammy’s poem – we sure liked your haiku – and all the other poems we’ve read that people did today. Mom has been watching “Victoria” too…..and was a Downton Abby fan. This painting – when she saw it and suggested it to Sammy for the challenge – brought out all kinds of interesting thoughts and ideas for her. It’s a simple painting but there are some subtle details that get you thinking! Glad you enjoy poetry day like we do. Next week’s is a great photo. Mom says she remembers seeing several houseboats just like this one when they toured the canals in Amsterdam. It made her want one of her own!!!!!!

  8. Dear Pam, Teddy and Angel Sam! I read your wonderful poem this morning when the kitties woke me up for breakfast. Then I fell back to sleep like some princesses do, so I awoke to a sun ray warming my face and read it again. What a delight xoxo Boomdee

  9. The term “heat pump” will always make me think of the commercials Ernest (Jim Varney) did for the natural gas companies back in the 80’s trying to warn his buddy Vern not to get a “heat pump, schmeat pump.” I hope Ernest wasn’t on the crew that tried to get your pump from the penthouse to the outhouse… and if he was, well that would be pretty special since he died a while back!

    • OMG I remember those commercials. Apparently the crew we had knew what they were doing and the new schmeat pump is working fabulously well. Thank heavens. I was having nightmares involving any number of “falling down the stairs with a 350 lb. schmeat pump” involving the crew or them putting it down in the attic and it falling through the ceiling on top of ME (my office is right below it!).

  11. We don’t like it when there are lots of workers and noisy work going on. We usually stay behind our gates in the kitchen.

We liked your take on the photo. Interesting details. And yes, there are so many different ways one could interpret what is happening there. We know one thing for sure, we wish we had that snow here:)

    • I decided early on in the heat pump installation process that I didn’t NEED to snoopervise. Normally I’m a very “active” snoopervisor but this crew was serious about working hard while they were here and would have no time to tell me how adorable I was (which I am) and how helpful I was being (which I wasn’t) so I just found some QUIET spots until it was all over. The photo challenge picture was super cool wasn’t it? Mom is going to try to find out a little more about the artist – whoever he/she was – and what they were thinking when they painted/draw it. Very interesting!!!!

  12. A lovely poem Angel Sammy. I am no good at poems but from the picture I think they were star crossed lovers who came to a tragic end. I can see no footprints in the snow and think it is their ghosts who have returned to ponder what might have been.
Teddy, I am glad you have peace and quiet again, and that you have a new and efficient heat pump.

    • Oh that’s a wonderful thought on the photo….in fact….maybe that’s the explanation for the broken fence on the left….maybe they have returned in ghost form to the spot where they decided to be together forever on a different plain? We just love this painting/drawing. It’s amazing the things it makes you THINK!!!

  15. I am so glad that invasion is done and over with, Teddy! You all deserve your peace and quiet, and that invasion sounded anything but peaceful and quiet. Angel Sammy, your poem is always so purrfect for the image! This image was so much fun to work with, and I was especially happy because that historical time period is one of my favorites. Next week’s image is just as fun, and we’ve been working on our poem for it!
