Sláinte !
Greetings from Ireland my friends! I’m continuing on my journey to find BACON AROUND THE WORLD!
Today I’m sharing a REALLY yummy recipe which is something I’m sure you’ve either heard of or possibly had to eat before…………But this MIGHT be a little different with the sweetness of brown sugar and the saltiness of bacon. You definitely need to try it!
Irish Fried Cabbage and Bacon
- 6 ounces thick bacon + drippings
- 1/2 small onion, diced
- 1/2 head green cabbage, shredded
- 1 tablespoon light brown sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
-
Cook bacon in a deep cast iron skillet over medium-high heat until crisp, about 4 to 6 minutes. Use a slotted spatula to remove the bacon pieces and transfer to a paper towel-lined plate.
-
Add the diced onion to the bacon drippings and cook until translucent, about 1 to 2 minutes.
-
Add shredded cabbage to the pan and toss to coat. Add in brown sugar, salt, and pepper and cook until cabbage is tender, about 5 to 7 minutes.
-
Add the bacon back to the cabbage and cook for another 2 to 3 minutes. Serve hot and season with additional salt and pepper if desired.
Doesn’t this sound EASY PEASY? Well it is, and if you “think” you don’t like cabbage – give this recipe a try – you just might change your mind. I kind of think the brown sugar is the key to why this is so amazing…….of course having bacon in it doesn’t HURT (!!)
I’m liking this guy’s hat !!
Next week I’m heading off to Italy…………..oh boy. I’ll find something totally delicious with bacon to share with you next Saturday so until then – keep on eating BACON!
INDEED I DID!
Hugs, Teddy the King of Baconia

Hmmmm, we baked bacon, yesterday, but kept the drippings because they are so useful. I only have a purple cabbage, but do have a green papaya (shredded green papaya makes the best coleslaw ever! – just put on lime juice and add whatever you like) SO, I’m going to see how this works with shredded green papaya.

Good luck with the papaya – the cabbage version is so nice and crunchy – not sure about the papaya but I bet it’s interesting!

That sounds better than my Polish lazy pierogi. I just fry cabbage and onion then mix it to bowtie noodles with butter- I am sure bacon would greatly improve it. Have a nice day! XO

Yep, going to have to try this. I still haven’t done the shrimp salad. Went to the Publix and forgot the ingredients. I was pretty sure I remembered them but I decided to wait till I had my list. Good Morning! It was actually not as hot last night and no storm so we walked, gosh it was nice! I haven’t walked in the evening for over weeks.

Oh walking in the evening after it gets cooled down is a WONDERFUL thing to do. It’s usually quiet and you can have a conversation without screaming over the lawnmowers and stuff……Mom finished off her shrimp salad Friday. I’m thinking tomorrow is grocery day again and she will probably get shrimp again – the salad is a FAVE for summer. Sending you and CH some hugs if you can use them!
