Well Madi you wanted us to celebrate your birthday by telling the tale of an epic car journey, or how we (or our humans) learned to drive or something about a road trip of SOME sort – a driving tale.

I have bunches of stories I could tell but I’m going to let Mom tell HER story, and by way of pawticipating in the “driving” part of this HOP for you, I’ll just show both me and my Angel brother Sammy in our cars that we “drove” in the Cat Scouts Cardwood Derbies of the past.    The rule was you had to make your car out of a cardboard box and you had to be IN the car to get credit.   Of course Angel Sammy who hated boxes (!) wouldn’t get in his car so Mom had to hold him inside for his photo.   HAHAHA

Here I am in my “milk truck” making deliveries – this was last year’s Scouts derby……

Here’s Mom holding Angel Sammy in his car – this was several years ago…..

Those are our “CAR EXPERIENCES”………………now here’s Mom to tell her tale!

Thanks Teddy!    I have a story to tell from many, many years ago…………I was probably 18 years old and on a date with my then boyfriend who became my first husband a few years later.    We used to take what we called “drives to nowhere” – we liked to just drive around exploring side roads (yes sometimes we were looking for a good “parking” (!!) spot) and one beautiful Fall afternoon we had just had lunch at a drive-in restaurant when we decided to explore.   We went down a side road that was just about one lane wide – it was paved and headed into a wooded area and we kept following it and following it and it turned into a dirt road.   It looked like a well-traveled dirt road though so we kept following it.    Meanwhile it was becoming “dusk” and we were thinking MAYBE we ought to be heading back home.   It was still light but in the woods on this road it began to FEEL just a little bit “ominous”……….we couldn’t find a good “turn around” spot – there just weren’t any but in one area it was slightly more clear on the sides of the dirt road than other places so he tried a 3-point turn………..we got STUCK.     Under all those leaves on the side of the road in what we thought was a “clear” area (no trees/shrubs) was MUD and we were stuck in it.    I was beginning to panic – I knew we sure couldn’t leave the car and look for help – we were in the middle of nowhere AND it was getting darker.    I knew my parents would have a fit……and of course there were NO CELL PHONES back in the 60s so we had no idea what we were going to do.    Then a miracle happened – we saw someone walking UP the dirt road in front of our car.    Honestly – I was even more scared when I saw this person – who knew what kind of person he was or where he came from, etc.   My boyfriend got out of the car and walked toward the man………he said he’d been hunting and heard what sounded like a car stuck and came to see if he could help.    I COULD BREATHE AGAIN.    He was very nice and helped get our car out of the mud and onto the road and helped us get the car turned around.    No I didn’t hug him but I sure thanked him.    He looked at us and said “I was young once!” and smiled.    He knew why we’d gone down that road……….!!

Madi, Angel Sammy, Teddy and I all hope that you have fun reading all the stories today of driving adventures.    This was the only “different” kind of driving related story I could come up with!!

Happy Birthday from Pam, Ted and Angel Sammy

Madi, remember this old photo of you and Raz arriving at the Drive-In Theater???   Did you and Raz go for a “drive to nowhere” afterwards????    Tee Hee

  1. Oh we remember the card box car and Angel Sammy!!!! Drives to nowhere just with a friend and the radio with good muzak are super sweet memories… today everything is different and with the high gas prices drives to nowhere became rare… also good muzak in the car ;o(

    • You’re right – actually drives to nowhere are more dangerous than ever – back in the good old days there were more good old people who really WOULD help you….these days you just can’t trust too many people – especially those roaming around out in the woods! LOL Good muzak is a thing of the past. The only way to listen to today’s music is with the volume turned all the way down (hahahahahaha).

      • guess what? I had not even a clue now to which nowhere I could drive… maybe being an adult and infested by all that daily little sorrows makes it impossible to drive to a special nowhere… and with a howling jusin bieber on board not even the gps can find that nowhere ;O)))

        • Justin Bieber is enough to make anyone so distracted on the road that they take a wrong turn or even better rip their radio out of the dashboard! Mom and Dad once in a while just get in the car and drive – there are a lot of country roads (PAVED ONES!!) that end up going to a small village somewhere and often there’s a tiny little restaurant where they can eat. Mom says you just have to make sure you have a full tank of gas because your “nowhere” might be FAR-AWAY-VILLE!

  2. Pam I know that feeling! Always an adventure checking out a “parking spot” … Ha! Lucky for you, you had me squirming when you said he was out hunting. I thought it was going to be one of those stories you share sitting around a camp fire. Great story for Madi’s Sweet 16! Good Morning!

      • OhMyGosh…. NO! We will have to change that though. I will show them to CH and see what we can decide on. Very cute, thanks for the link. CH’s Mom gave us a darling flamingo wine stopper. We didn’t find it and several other things she had put in a gift bag for a housewarming gift until we went through the house and found them after she had died… happy tears.

        • They are all so cute and I am only on page two. There are quite a few to choose from here in Venice. I hadn’t even thought about a flamingo wine time. Maybe we will look for some today! We received two very nice wine glasses in a basket full of goodies from our HOA welcoming committee.

    • That story about the “old days” and the dirt road was one I never did tell my parents. LOL We also never went down a dirt road again looking for a parking spot. I do remember some of our other favorites though. LOL

  4. Mol MOL MOL .. Mom’s first thought when she read dirt road, was no cell phones back then!
Whew thank goidness for simpler times and kind strangers! She told me she recalled having to do a 3 point turn and parallel park for her driving test. At the time she thought both would be useless skills‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️🎈🎈🙀🤗

    • Hi Birthday Girl! Well, I think a more experienced driver wouldn’t have tried that 3-point turn but Mom says she and her guy were DESPERATE (translated to Mom was freaking out). The amazing thing is that she got home in time for dinner and she NEVER told her Mom (or heaven forbid her Dad!) this story. Good thing huh? HAHAHAHAHA

    • Not everyone is willing to tell a “gone parking with my boyfriend” post but this was hilarious and frightening all rolled into one……..and one of my favorite memories of my first hubby too.

  9. Great photos of you, Angel Sammy, Raz and Madi in all those fun vehicles!!! We bet your Mom was a lot more selective about what paths she would let her boy friend follow after that harrowing experience!!! Thanks for sharing it – we are so glad it had a happy ending.

  10. When petcretary was newly married, she was in a similar situation, only it was about 5 below zero outside, and the truck we were in conked out in the middle of nowhere. A man drove up in a cab from a transport truck. I was alone in the pickup and hubby had gone to use a phone to call AAA…in 1988, we didn’t have cells either. Anypaws the man came out of his big truck…I was having a fit and praying it would be a good person. God heard me..the truckdriver said come into my truck, its warmer in there…Yikes, I began to panic again. But since I had prayed, I had to trust things would be under the care of God…and when I got in the big truck cabin, he was playing Handel’s Messiah. He did not know that was one of petcretary’s fave composers! So it was the sign I needed. He waited until hubby got back, and then let us both in the truck until the tow truck came to take the pickup to a service station…and he even drove us to our home! About 50miles. We were able to take the other car then…but it was a bad situation gone better because of an angel in disguise. I was never able to thank that man properly, he left in a big hurry as soon as we got out of is truck…but I had sort of thanked him, while we were driving to our house. He told us he was just doing his good deed for the day:)
