Thoroughly Poetic Thursday

POETRYSAMBADGE

Here we are again!  Today is “G” Day!

I thought and thought and thought about what I should write about for “Letter G” and finally settled on GARDENING……….I hope you like my offering for this Thursday’s Poetic exercise!

GARDENING

Beautiful smells as I cruise by

The perfumed air rising to the sky

The busy bees stop by to dip

Into the blooms to take a sip

When I was young and a butterfly came

I couldn’t resist it – like a moth to a flame

I’d watch and wait and would take a chance

To catch it and do my happy dance!

I’d proudly carry my pretty prize

To Mom who gave me her “critical eye”

So I’d let it go – it would fly away

And I’d start my game again the very next day!

When I was younger (and so was Mom!) we used to have BIG gardens full of flowers in our back yard…………….Mom had to work hard to keep them pretty – watering, fertilizing, planting, moving, raking, weeding…………and I would sit with her in the shade and watch.   We no longer have big gardens because it was just too much work (and the deer decided to eat everything in sight anyway once they discovered the “buffet”) so now we have porch and deck gardens.    I still watch the butterflies come and go but now even if they practically land right on my nose, I don’t try to catch them.   Mom and I just sit and watch as we get our visitors to what gardens we have – bees, butterflies, dragonflies, ladybugs, praying mantis, and we enjoy seeing Mother Nature’s critters enjoying our gardens too!

Yesterday my Mom and Dad deserted me for the WHOLE DAY – they drove up to the mountains – just a bit less than an hour away – to Skyline Drive.    I’ve talked about it on my blog before and shown photos but Mom DID take a few yesterday……………Mom said as she sat on the overlook wall where the wildflowers were growing she saw LOTS of bees and even the occasional “mountain butterfly”………………..seems Mother Nature sprinkles her beauty from mountains to valleys to MY BACK YARD!!!!

Have a HAPPY Thursday!

  1. This is a great post, Sammy. 🙂 I once broke a camera trying to “capture” a butterfly with it. I mostly learned my lesson. I still try to get butterfly pictures, but I watch where I’m going now. The photos your mommy took at the overlook are awesome!

    Have a beautiful day. 🙂

    • I think butterflies are so pretty and they like to tease cats I think…..they will fly JUST OUT OF REACH – then off they go without a care in the world! Mom and Dad had a nice time in the mountains and Mom saw even more bees and butterflies up there than we have down here!

    • Hi Kosmo!!! Glad you like my poem…..I enjoy watching the “wildlife” we get around here but when I was younger I used to chase the birds, butterflies, and chipmunks with great gusto! These days I “chase them with my eyes” by watching their antics – then closing my eyes and dreaming of what it was like as a youngster leaping around and trying to catch them!!!!! Mom and Dad had fun up in the mountains and said it was a whole lot cooler up there than down here. They never get tired of going up there any time of the year – it’s always changing.

      HAPPY THURSDAY!

  2. Your poem is beautiful Sammy, as are the photos of Skyline Drive. Mum invited friends for dad’s birthday yesterday and had a BBQ. Luckily the weather was good in the evening, but today it is raining again. Our hots have well and truly disappeared!

  4. That is a great poem. You should be chosen as a poet Laureate. It is too bad that the deer eat everything in sight. Your Mom took beautiful photos, that looks like a nice place to spend the day- sorry she abandoned you though. We love poetry day, we will do it again- Phoebe will have to think of an H. XO

    • We sure did enjoy seeing the gorgeous spot Mau chose to take his new wife for their honeymoon! Gorgeous and Savannah is an amazing city……….that Inn looks a lot like the one Mom and Dad stayed in there – it was on a beautiful old “square” in town. Stay cool – it will be another hottie in spite of the fact we got some RAIN last night!

    • Mom’s garden just needs watering from time to time if Mom Nature doesn’t cooperate……….so really it’s pretty self-sufficient….but in this heat she’s watering it TWICE a day!

      Stay cool girls!
