Sam’s Garden Update
Things are perking right along on the transition from Spring to Summer here……………as usual we go from wet cool to HOT HUMID without batting an eye! The stuff Mom planted on the deck, front porch and the few things in the yard are growing like weeds (come to think of it, some of them ARE weeds!). Anyway, I promised an update and this is it!
Mom used to have a whole lot of garden plots all around our big yard until the deer became immune to all the sprays to keep them away and ate everything in sight. Now most things are on the front porch or back deck with a FEW exceptions. So far the deer having come up on the front porch (thank heavens) or back deck! Here are just a few really OLD photos of how things used to be “pre-deer and other critters”:
So that’s just a few of the areas Mom used to work hard to keep up but these days – it’s a lot easier to go out on the deck or front porch and water with a watering can!
I like gardening too…………………..
Happy Thursday!
Sam the Gardener
gardening is a good job… I like it too and I dig holes everywhere… you never know when you will need a good hole, right? I wish I had such a big garden like you Sammy… then my dad would get his the lawn mower ride he always wanted :o)

Deer when hungry will eat just about anything! Now our plants are UP or close to the house and they leave us pretty much alone!

Your garden is so pretty, Sammy! My human is envious because she never has the time or patience to do any of this! Not to mention that the deer don’t come out this way, so if she ever wanted to plant hostas, they would be safe!
LikeLike
My Mom LOVES hostas because there are so many different varieties including HUGE ones – but even the few she stubbornly clings to which are planted in a small garden right by our deck will eventually be eaten – the deer even came up to the front of our house over winter last year and ate our azaleas! If they’re hungry they’ll eat anything. We think if the woods weren’t behind our house we’d never see deer AND we have fewer of them now anyway – lots of construction around and they mostly have moved away from this area.

Everything is looking lovely and it is nice to just water with a can. The Deer were naughty but open space is easy to manage. 😀

YES – the open space and no gardens just mean Mom Nature can reclaim more of our yard which is FINE WITH US!

Hi Sam, you have a beautiful garden. Poor deer, were he gets his vegetables now? I have also catnip, but I don’t like it. Dad says I have to go to a vet, because all the cats must like catnip.
Have a nice day in your garden.
Kosmo, a cat in faraway Finland.

Dear Kosmo……know what? I don’t care for catnip either! But I do react a bit to silvervine – kind of like catnip only a different plant. As for the deer – they have PLENTY to eat down in our woods AND they also like to eat the sunflower seeds that we put in our bird feeders……they just don’t get to eat all Mom’s flowers anymore……..

Here, mom said she can no longer feed the birdies as the deer always came to get all the expensive sunflowers hearts out of the feeder. She said she was paying $10 a sack, of seed to see it gone from the 5# capacity feeder within three days. She naievly thought there were even more masses of birdies coming until she saw to deer out there with their tongues in the feeder openings chowing down. She gave up after another month or so of throwing away money. She said her Hostas are gone too, and even two azaleas. She can’t even have her container garden on the DECK any more. No, not deer of course, but raccoons and possums climbed up the deck and destroyed the big containers of ‘maters and peppers and herbs. Mom said her son in NC due to massive construction, has an entire herd in his back yard every day. Yard and plantings are destroyed. xoxo Sammy. Love you.

The poor deer are so hungry but it’s expensive with the bird seed AND all the plants “up in smoke” !! We really think the BIG problem we’ve had all these years is over now – just one or two occasional deer seen since when we first moved here there were no other big developments around but now there are and without as many woods, the deer have retreated (thank heavens!). They are destructive but beautiful beasties indeed!

Your flowers and porch are looking lovely, Sammy. We have a lot of deer here also but they can’t get into our garden. They are usually in our fields eating the grass. They are very timid though and run as soon as they see people.

Hi Sammy,
Why don’t you come over and (help me) do our garden?! I could really use an accomplished gardener. As to the deer: ours have indeed come up on the back porch and nibbled at the ferns there. And lately I saw them get up on their hind legs and eat leaves of our Bois d’ Arc trees in the front yard. Well, can’t be helped.
Have a wonderful time, and hopefully not too hot and humid weather,
Pit

Hi Mr. Pit! Well, the deer are hungry and eat what they can no matter WHERE it is I think. I’d rather have THEM than bear – fortunately only one of those has come through our yard!!!! Happy gardening…..our weather has been hot but so far we haven’t had the horrid humidity we will get in a week or two!

Hi Sammy, your front porch and home sure are lovely! You and your mom have done a great job. We live in an apartment and so our mom has decided to try balcony gardening. She’s got cherry tomatoes, thyme, rosemary, dill, and chives. I figure with all those different plants, something is bound to grow and she won’t be disappointed, but we do face north, which is great on hot days, but bad for the plants that need sun. I don’t like catnip either and Oliver loves it a little too much! Thanks for sharing your photos today Sam!

Hi Calvin! Mom saw your Mom’s plants on FB and says GOOD LUCK! For years and years when she was in apartments she had balcony gardens and grew tomatoes, cucumbers, green peppers, and herbs BUT she always had a lot of sun. If you don’t get sun you will have a challenge…..Mom would also have a lot of flowers in pots. She said she made it as close to having a little “yard” as she could!
