I’ll HELP You Mom

Yeah sure………………..for Sammy “help” used to mean “today I won’t hop up on the bed and go instantly to sleep knowing you’re about to change the sheets and that you will NOT wake me if I’m here sleeping”………..these days if Sam “helps” he goes down to the basement and naps while I’m doing laundry.  That’s MY kind of help!

Sam making himself comfy while I'm TRYING to put fresh sheets on the bed!

Aw gee Mom….do you HAVE to put the bedspread back on the bed? This fleece blankie is so NICE!

It used to be that once the fleece blanket got BACK on the bed after I put clean sheets on, Sam would park himself there and make biscuits for about a half hour then snooze for a few hours and if I was lucky, I had the bedspread back on the bed by the time David and I were getting IN it for sleep that night!    Those fleece blankets are cat magnets.

These days though he can’t get up on the bed – refuses to use kitty stairs, or a chair, or anything to help him get up – he just doesn’t get ON the bed period.   Those achy breaky joints stop him.  I’ll pop him up there if he comes into the bedroom while I’m in there though………and put him back on the floor when he’s ready to get down – it’s what Moms do right?

Know what?   I kind of miss the days when he’d interfere with bed-changing and laundry…………………I’d love to hit his “instant replay” button and go through the last 16 years all over again – WHAT FUN!    Not that we don’t STILL have fun, but laundry day used to be something I looked forward to because of the playing around with him……..these days I look forward to laundry day for the clean sheets.   Hmm…….doesn’t sound as fun does it?!

LOVE clean sheets!!

Aw heck Mom….we still have fun….it’s fun NAPPING – right?

Sammy looking soft and sweet (asleep!)

Yes Darling Boy…….napping IS fun when I can watch you do it!

Happy Thursday!

Sammy

    • Well said……….I know I keep Mom hopping in a different way as an old guy than I kept her hopping when I was a baby. It was all play, fun, chasing, being silly together THEN, and now it’s cuddles, security, senior care which is still SWEET but in many ways more work (and worry) !!

    • You do a great job of making your bed “weim-worthy” – you’re under/in/on top of the covers and blankies making it smell JUST RIGHT….if my Mom and Dad had a bed that wasn’t so danged HIGH OFF THE FLOOR I might pop up there once in a while like I did when I was young BUTTTTTTT nowadays I let Mom be my personal elevator service – she’ll lift me up and down if I ask!

  2. I do think it is way more fun to have kitty help with laundry! We don’t get to do it here, sadly (the housekeeping service does the sheet changing and the laundry happens in the garage where we’re not allowed). Binga would be more than glad to help, though. Although she is 15-1/2, she’s still ready to jump on the bed and do inspections! She’s pretty crazy for an older kitty and bounds up the stairs like she’s possessed! Which maybe she is.

    • From what I know of your sister Binga, she IS possessed….!!!! Especially with photobombing you (hahaha) But seriously, I think kitties were MADE for laundry assistance duties. If you google “cats and laundry” all you see is picture after picture of a cat in a laundry basket – full or otherwise – dirty clothes or clean clothes – doesn’t matter……it’s just a NICE COMFY bed that smells like “home” (or humans).

  3. You should try hopping into the laundry basket, S. It’s easier than making it up to the bed, and moms love that kind of help. When I sit in the basket on top of the laundry, Mom says, “You are ridiculous.” I’m pretty sure that means cute…..

    • HAHAHA…..Cupcake I think in your case “ridiculous” probably does mean cute – everything you do is cute (although your Mom might think otherwise!!!!!!). I used to hop in the laundry basket and let Mom pull me around – it was a nice ride on the carpet….when I was tiny I would get in the basket when it had WARM stuff in it from the dryer! Now THAT felt yummy!

  4. My Mom says that her previous kitty, Beezy, used to love to jump up on the bed as Mom was replacing the top sheet and had it flung out over the bed. I kinda did that once or twice, but evidently not nearly as often as Beezy did. I’m only 7, so I still jump up on the bed pretty easily.
That’s pretty neat that you have your own hoomin elevator, Sammy!

    • Hi Sundae! I know you like being on the quilt on your Mom and Dad’s bed…I’m sure if my Mom’s bed was LOWER I’d be up there more frequently – but in the meantime my elevator works just fine!

    • That’s so cute……Madi the Marine – what a picture that conjures up…..sounds like a blog post !!!! Changing sheets day is something that about 99.9% of cats pawticipate in – one way or another……and it’s fun to google “cats and laundry” just to see all the dozens of photos of kitties snoozing away in the laundry basket. Please tell Madi the Marine that Sammy the Slob sends hugs!

  6. Oh Sammy, your post made mom’s eyes water just a bit as she was remembering all the excellent help Admiral gave her with the bed and the laundry pile as well. She too, in the last 6 mo. of Admiral’s life wished that she were in there helping as always. Mom used to have to just go off and wait till Admiral woke up or the two of them would be tussling trying to get the sheet pulled up and straight (not!).Mom used to put her up there on the bed but she would just stand there. She did use her stairs though.

As I get even older I know that, as with Admiral, I will need mom here to help me. That’s love. Unconditional. We are all family. 💗

    • Yes Katie…..we are among ourselves as kitties but we’re also REAL and very ACTIVE members of our human families – we need just as much love and attention as human kiddies do – maybe more! We squeal with delight, pout with sad eyes and faces, and do things just like our “baby” human counterparts. Families – all of us – one day at a time!!!!! You and I don’t EVER have to second guess our Moms – they are our “here on earth angels” !!!!

  7. I love this post too! Z loved sheet changing day… and folding clothes. It’s good your Mom puts you up on the bed and knows when you want down. 16 years is a long time, you get to know someBODY very well in that time… ♥

    • IT’s true isn’t it……Mom knew all of my Dad’s disgusting habits in SIX DAYS so you can imagine what she’s learned about him in 16 YEARS! HAHAHA Just kidding (sort of). Mom and I are “joined at the hip” these days as I’m more needy than ever in my whole life but she’s so tuned into me that she almost knows before I do what I’m about to ask her to do – and DOES IT – like lifting me up and down off the bed. Z sounds like a man after my own heart…… seems a whole lot of us just LOVE laundry – stinky or clean, doesn’t matter.

    • What an EXCELLENT suggestion! The sheets and other bedding do make a GREAT mountain….it’s about the SOFTEST mountain climbing I can do! As for bacon – you know I pretty much get that any old time because if you think I’m a bacon-a-holic, you should see my Mom and Dad! HAHAHAHAHA

  10. Sammy it hurts our hearts that there are things you can no longer do. I guess living vicariously though Scouts is a good way for you to still be active. Our mom knows that your mom cherishes all the memories from when you were younger and more spry and that she loves you just as much now as she did. then. We love you too. Sending lots of purrs and warm hugs. XOCK, Lily Olivia, Mauricio, Misty May, Giulietta, Fiona, Astrid, Lisbeth and Calista Jo

    • Oh thank you my dear and sweet friends…..yes, Scouts is a good way for me to be “active” but sometimes even that is hard to keep up with!!! Sometimes I think I’m HYPERACTIVE (haha) with Scouts and Mom agrees. Mom gets kind of sad sometimes when she looks at me….thin and more scruffy instead of chubby and neat. Feeling my bones instead of feeling my fat (!)….. but it’s all part of this thyroid thing and we know that. My doc keeps an eye on me and Mom and Dad sure as heck do. I make SURE they do (tee hee). I’m hoping to have a lot more time here but I am not afraid to leave either. My Mom says she feels the same way. I think it’s what humans call “making peace with things”. No matter what, we just wake up each day and put one foot or paw in front of the other and carry on. Friends like you make me happy – I think as long as I’m truly happy, I’ll be around!!!!!!

  12. We were lucky – Caleb was 18 when we discovered Cosequin, and it changed him from rickety to jumping back on the bed within about a week. I *SO* wish it worked for every kitty like it did for him!

But you’re right, Sammy – napping is fun too!!

    Such sweet memories …HUGS.

    • I tried hard to like having the Cosequin – Mom still has the bottle of it we got from the vet – BUT I simply am up to my eyeballs with the pill-taking of the thyroid meds. I look at her like she’s nuts when she wants me to take ANOTHER pill…….sigh……getting older stinks but at least I’m still here keeping my Mom and Dad company in a “quiet” kind of way!!

  13. I know what you mean. There are so many things that change as our loved babies age. The thing I miss the most is our daily walks in the fields. Some days we would walk the whole way round and be out for nearly 2 hours. Now we just go to the paddock on the other side of the garden hedge. I often wonder if Flynn misses going down to the bottom field where the woods and stream are.

    • I wonder often about what Sammy is thinking about everything……because it’s changed so much. I wonder how he feels, I wonder if he’s happy, I wonder if I’m doing all the right things to make him comfortable…..I bet Flynn remembers the long walks and Eric and how things were – but I know you join me in hoping that our boys are enjoying their “NOW” in a different way. Companionship is a wonderful thing and THAT – at least – we still have with them!

  14. Awww, such beautiful memories. Isn’t everyday wonderful when you have the love of a pet? Even laundry days 😀 Thanks so much for sharing your story Pam. It’s so worrisome when you become a caregiver more than a playmate, I agree. Mums don’t mind though. It’s a small price for all the love, snuggles and purrs. Gentle hugs to you both xo K

    • You’re right…..it is worrisome keeping a much closer eye on Sam, looking for signs of discomfort…..at least he’s living in a house of “oldies” with us – the three of us are limping along together!!!
