A Fall Caturday

Standard

Happy Caturday!   What a beautiful day yesterday was…..Fall is really falling around here and the trees are nowhere near “peak” but beginning to get rather brilliant.  Check this out!

We’ve got two of these burgundy beauties in the back yard!

Check this out too!  It’s also “Fall-ish” but in a different way.  This is an oil painting my Mom did back when she was writing her first mystery novel “The Mystery of David’s Bridge”.   (I’ve shown this before on my blog actually.)  She finished painting it BEFORE the book came out so she sent the image of the painting to her publisher and said she’d love for them to use it as the cover of her book.  Did they?  Heck no!  They did their OWN artwork for the book which was OK but wouldn’t it have been way cool if they’d used my Mom’s????

Mom’s old covered bridge painting COULD have been a cover for her book!

Seeing as how it’s Caturday, I thought I’d spend a little time this morning enjoying the library with my Dad.  Being companionable you know.  He reads in one chair and I SLEEP in the other.

Sam in Library

Catching some rays in the library…..

Mom is spending the morning up in her studio doing some drawings for her new book.  I’m kind of excited about it – it’s about a colony of feral cats what lives in the woods!  The main character-cat is a tuxedo kitten named Ferol.  Mom thought that would be fun to name him that because (a) he’s a feral kitty and (b) my Grandad’s  (my Mom’s Dad) first name was Ferol !    Why a tuxedo cat instead of a lovely ginger tabby like YOU KNOW WHO???  Easier to draw she said…….uh huh……sure Mom……

So how are you going to spend your Caturday?  Hope your humans pay lots of attention to you this weekend….why?  Well, because we deserve it!

    • Hi Mollie! I bet your Mummy would read my Mom’s new book to you if you asked her to………but it probably won’t even be published for another couple of months. You can bet I’ll let everyone know when it is! 😉

  1. Good morning, Sammy! I remember your Mom’s painting of the covered bridge: it’s beautiful! They should have used it for her book. (And I loved her book too!) Hope you have a nap-filled day. I’m planning to. My pawrents will be gone for part of it: Motor Man’s working and Mom’s going to a stamping convention – whatever THAT is!

    • Hi Sundae! My Mom was happy that your Mom enjoyed her book…..she had fun writing it. Enjoy your day today with the house to yourself. Stamping? Hmm…isn’t that what we do with our paws when our pawrents aren’t paying attention to us?

      Happy Caturday!

    • Hi Charlie…..sorry you have a rainy day but they are the best kind of napping days so ENJOY! It’s too bad Mom’s publisher didn’t use her painting BUT now that she’s no longer with that publisher she can do anything she wants to do for her covers – she’s publishing the books HERSELF! YAY!

      Kitty hugs and snuggly naps,

  3. It’s a very good painting, I like covered bridges, they are so mystic&scary :o) The road reminds me of moms favorite artist edvard munch :o) I hope the feral cat colony gets a ginger tabby too – whats a cat colony without a ginger tabby? Have a wonderful caturday :o)

    • Hi Easy! My Mom loves Edvard Munch’s work too….I think that feral cat colony needs a ginger tabby too but as usual Mom seems to have a mind of her own when it comes to writing. Harumph. I pouted BIG but it didn’t get me in the book anyway. Maybe she’ll write a WHOLE BOOK about me and make up for it???

Happy Saturday – I hope it’s a SUNNY one with no rain for you!

    • Hi Miss Pix! Well, the publisher liked to have a certain “look” to all their book covers so they preferred doing their own thing but I think my Mom’s photo would have been WAY MORE COOL…..oh well……such is life huh? I’m going to have a GREAT Caturday – it’s chilly but sunny which means I’ll stay INSIDE and enjoy some sun puddles. YAY!

Kitty Hugs and Happy Caturday to you too!

  4. That publisher was silly not to use such an awesome picture on the cover of your Mom’s book. My mom thinks she can draw, but she draws like a 3 year old, and everything she draws looks like her!! Your mom has actual talent. My mom is delusional.

    • HAHAHAHA Cupcake! I bet your Moms drawings are grand. I also know your Mom writes – does she illustrate her own books? I think my Mom might do her own cover for the feral cat book but that remains to be seen……The only artwork I do is occasional muddy pawprints on the linoleum….and Mom isn’t crazy about that!

    • Hi Cody….thanks for saying that. Mom says the publisher wanted a certain “look” for all of their products/books so wanted to do all their authors covers themselves BUT even so, they COULD have gone ahead and used Mom’s painting just to break the mold! Sigh. Oh well…..you can lead a horse to water but you can’t make him drink (so says Mom….I have no idea what that means…. ;)…..!)

  6. Wow, your mom has talent!
I know what you mean when you say she has trouble painting animal or humans. 🙂 I have no trouble with doing nature-stuff, but animals and humans are difficult to draw!

    Like

    • I think it’s because I want so much to capture people and animal’s “spirit” and personality on canvas and I simply can’t do that – landscapes, etc. are easy compared to that. Also, what if the person didn’t think I made them look young enough or old enough or happy enough or WHATEVER?!?!?! Too much pressure! So you paint too?

      • I draw, or… I used to, when I was younger. Landscapes, I tried humans and animals too, but they’re much more harder to draw. I’m a perfectionist when it’s about drawing. Nature are often simple lines and shadows, but with animals and living things it’s the look in their eyes, their personality. 🙂
I don’t have much of my drawings anymore, the ones I don’t like, I simply throw away, hahaha. But maybe I should get into it again. 🙂

        • I’ve saved my favorite oil paintings done over my many (!) years of painting and they hang on my studio walls. Back in my younger days I sold quite a lot of my work in galleries but now I just sketch and do small paintings or pen/ink – I find it relaxing. You might give it a try again! I agree with you about subject matter though…..painting people or animals means needing to capture that special “something” that makes the painting come ALIVE. With landscapes, etc., it’s making it interesting or beautiful to look at…..totally different. GOOD LUCK!

  7. Your mom is so talented! And I love that tree! We don’t have leaves changing colors down here in Florida. In fact, it’s almost 90 in the daytime and one of Jen’s weekend chores is to mow the lawn. Enjoy your Caturday! 🙂

    • Hi Rumpy! I think I’ve told you my Mom lived in Clearwater, Florida for a few years after living in Virginia for MANY years, and missed the leaves so much she eventually moved back here! I’m glad she did of course since she found ME ME ME here in Virginia…..Tell your Mom I hope she enjoys mowing the lawn – if it’s as pretty THERE as it is HERE, she will.

    • Please tell your human thanks from my Mom! Since her publisher went out of business and she’s got her book rights BACK my Mom will probably republish the book with her painting as the cover – – – better late than never right??? Tee Hee!

  9. Dear Sammy,
Me thinks that painting is pawsome. And Ferol is a cool name me would loves to read your nommy’s new book. Mommy thinks the hardest to paints is all black or mostly white cats. it is hard to get them to look 3D.

As soon as my Mom’s new book is published I’ll be announcing it on my bloggie – you know I have to help my Mom out to sell books! I’m her agent. I should get YOU to be her agent since you make such a pawsome campaign manager….tee hee.

Give your Mommy a hug from me AND save one for yourself too OK?

    • Hi DogDaz Cats! Nice to meet you…..Ferol was my Dad’s first name and it was a family name – the tradition on his side of the family was for the son to receive the father’s middle name as his first name. My brother is Michael Ferol and my brother’s son is Matthew Michael. As for the actual name “FEROL”, my Dad’s family were all originally from Britain so I assume it’s British in origin.

      Happy Sunday!

    • Hi Savvy! Majestic huh? Gee thanks! Maybe I could call that chair my throne??? It’s sort of a library – it’s a little room off the foyer filled with bookshelves and big enough for a couple of chairs. My pawrents call it a library since there’s a lot of books there – I call it my THRONE ROOM…….hahahaha
