A Feral Cat Story

Standard

Hi Peeps!  I’m turning my blog over to my Mom today because she wanted to tell you about a book she read that has a special place in her heart.  Why?  Well, because it’s a true tale about a little feral kitten and how she captured the hearts of the writer and her family on the island of Cat Cay.

Take it away Mom……… 😀

“Thanks Sam – mighty generous of you to let me borrow your audience to tell them about this book.  The book is called “Taming Me:Memoir of a Clever Island Cat” and the author is Cathy Unruh.  I was sent an Advance Reader Copy of this book by the publisher several months ago and was saving my comments to post closer to the time the book would be published.  When is that exactly??  Well, it’s being published on October 16th which just happens to be National Feral Cat Day!

Many of you know that Sammy was/is a feral cat; perhaps at this point, 13 years after we adopted him from the shelter, we can truly call him “formerly feral”.  Because I always felt bad for the little ginger cat we saw in the shelter all alone and scared I wondered what his life had been like up to that point even though there had only been about six weeks of life for him then.  “Taming Me” gave me a true vision of what it probably WAS like and that’s why this book will always be a favorite of mine.

The book follows the life of a little kitten who ultimately was named Lucy Miracle by the family who one day took her home.  Lucy was all alone on an island where cats were treated like vermin – trapped and destroyed.  There is much of this book that’s been fictionalized, but there’s also much that sticks to the reality of Lucy’s life on Cat Cay as she struggles to survive.   This little cat had such spunk!  I was rooting for her from the first page as she struggled to find food and shelter with her Mother and siblings.

Cathy Unruh’s writing style was perfect for this story – she truly does have an incredible talent for “becoming” a cat in the way she related everything Lucy saw, felt, did…..the awkwardness of a kitten – the shyness of a feral – the fear of the unknown.  It was all so well done through the eyes of Lucy.   The endearing story captured me from the first page and held me throughout the entire book.  I cried when Lucy’s Mother died but in a way it was truly the beginning of Lucy’s new life as a housecat in her “forever home”.

I won’t say more because I’d like to recommend that you visit Cathy’s website and pre-order the book to read for yourself.  You won’t forget the read – I can promise you it will be on your library shelves forever.  The book can be pre-ordered through Barnes & Noble.

Click HERE to visit Cathy’s website……while I’ve never met Cathy, I feel like I know her as a kindred spirit in her love of animals.  You will too!

Here’s Lucy!

Another dear friend of mine, Caren Gittleman from CAT CHAT (and Dakota’s Den!) did a really wonderful review of this book too on Cody’s blog a while ago……Caren does spectacular book reviews, so if you’d like even more information or just want to hear from someone else who loved this book, please visit Cody and Caren at CAT CHAT to read her review.   Click HERE to read.

Happy Friday Sammy’s friends!  Now, Sammy, come here so I can give you a GREAT BIG MOMMY HUG for letting me use your blog today!!!”

Love, Sammy and his Mom Pam 😀

    • Gee Mollie! Thanks for singing Happy Birthday to my Dad – he REALLY appreciated it. I’m gonna try to give him lots of attention today (in between naps) so he knows how much I love him. I gave him a special card and a framed photo of me for his desk – as if he needed reminding of how adorable I am! 😉

  2. Sounds like a fantastic book. My wonderful BJ was also a feral kitten in a CITY so the fact that she stayed alive after being on the side of the street when she was so tiny, is our MIRACLE. I love, love , love happy endings for all the furry babies. I’m sure you’ll give your dad a great big Sammy hug for his birthday…tell him happy, happy from me!!

    • Hi Miss June! Wow….it’s a very tough life in the city with cars and so many people and noise – and being a tiny kitten had to be VERY scary for her. I’m sl glad that you found her and gave her a forever home. The book Mom talked about today has a very happy ending too! I’ll tell my Dad you said Happy Birthday – and I hope you have a super duper Friday!

  3. Wow, Sammy. Lots of stuff going on today on your blog! First, thanks to your Mom for reviewing that book. What a great review! I’m sure Motor Mommy will be crying, too, if she reads it. AND Happy Birthday to your Dad today. You know…. I really knew that his birthday was coming up soon: that’s why I was “flirting” with him so when your pawrents visited last weekend! But, Sammy, you’ll always be my love!
    Have a good Furriday!

    • Hi Sundae! My Mom AND Dad told me how flirty you were last weekend but I was glad that you showed my Dad how adorable you are (which I of course already knew!!). He thought you were quite beautiful and funny – especially when you were playing with the laser light with Motor Man! I think your Mom would love the feral kitty book…..it made my Mom’s eyes leaky but in a “good” way because the story had a very happy ending…….

Heart review and I’m now very eager to read the book, although I fear I will cry horribly through it. I’m a real sucker for that!

    • Hi Miss Susan…guess what….Mommy cried while reading the book too! It was a tender, sweet, happy story in the end though when little Lucy got her forever home – still Mom says it PERFECTLY related the plight of the feral kitten trying to survive. Definitely worth a read though. Thanks for the birthday wishes for my Pop! He had a great day – Mom and I made sure of that…….. 😀

The book was wonderful Mommy says – and Mommy knows her stuff when it comes to books since she’s reading ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL the time! I don’t mind her reading lots though – that means she’s got an available lap for me when she’s sitting down! Tee Hee

  7. I really enjoyed reading your review. It sounds like a moving and unforgettable story. Thank you for sharing it with us! My family in the midst of helping a little feral one at the moment and are on the verge of placing him with a family He’s already come a long way, and went from not coming anywhere near people to accepting attention and even asking for it now. Do you think a copy of this book might be a good idea for his new family?

    • I think it’s a WONDERFUL idea as a gift for the feral kitten’s new family Melanie. It’s a charming and very realistic look at what being a feral is like – that little kitten and my own Sammy (and SOOOOOO many other cats) start off their lives just trying to survive. Finding a forever home is a lovely “new beginning”. I think you can pre-order the book on the author’s website and probably through any Barnes and Noble book store.

      What a lovely idea!

Sammy we stayed at a BB for a couple of days in Kansas City and they have an old man Kitty that lives there and we hadn’t been there for a bit and they had taken in another kitty. Two kitties!! So I got my kitty fix this week 🙂 The kitties were originally feral.

I’m sure that book would be available for Nooks and Kindles – I bet if you visit her website you could find out for sure – it also may be released in that format already before the “paper” version on October 16th. It really was a wonderful book (so says Mom). So you got your kitty fix at the B&B? That’s way cool. Two cats are TWICE the fun!! 😀
