An Unlikely Couple….

Standard

Good Morning!  So here’s the deal………I’m starting to suspect something might be going on between our “yard cat”  who visits us off and on during the day for a mooch, and Freddy the pool-loving frog.   Mom and I have both noticed that frequently (like yesterday morning for instance) the two of them show up on the front porch at the same time.  Yep – they sure do.

Yesterday morning at 5AM when it was still pitch black outside, Mom looked out the windows around the front door and saw Stevie so Mom got Stevie’s food, opened the front door and there sat Freddy AND Stevie.  Mom bent down and filled Stevie’s bowl – and Freddy moved under a plastic table that has a big plant on it.  Mom quickly ran upstairs and got her digital and snapped these:

I think Freddy was embarrassed for Mom to catch him with Stevie on the front porch…..or maybe he’d just popped out of his “pool” ??

“munch….crunch….hmm…wonder why this water has a decidedly froggy aroma and taste???!!!”

The distance between Stevie and Freddy was about two feet.  Freddy was WET……I suspect Freddy was taking a soak in Stevie’s water bowl but I can’t prove it.  The other possibility – that they arrived on our doorstep TOGETHER is too mind-boggling for me to handle.  Is this a case of “THE ULTIMATE ODD COUPLE” ??????????????????

Freddy is a big froggy and undeniably handsome I’m sure to a lady frog, but for Stevie and Freddy to be anything other than friends that hang out?  Well that’s downright impossible.  I think they are “night time friends”…….Freddy’s out at night just like Stevie is – I guess they’re hunting or whatever it is they do……..and maybe they’re just good company for each other……..whatcha think?  Reasonable assumption?

Sam On His Tissue

I’ll have to spend some time today pondering this “odd couple” theory of mine….it’s rather mind-boggling isn’t it?!

Perhaps it will just remain one of life’s little mysteries………but I do LOVE a good mystery!

  1. I have seen odd couples before, but a cat and a frog…never! I think you are right – they are probably just “prowling” buddies! Hope you have a great day, and don’t overheat your brain pondering this mystery!

  2. Oh, Sammy…what a great blog! You have such an exciting life. And you’re definitely right. Stevie and Freddie are surely the ultimate Odd Couple!!

  3. Well, Sherlock, (I love Mollie’s comment!) I think you have yourself a mystery. Perhaps your mom could write a mystery story about this odd couple!
    Happy Thursday!

    • Hmm….perhaps I’ll suggest that to my Mom – although she’s got her hands (well fingers on the keyboard anyway) full writing the feral cat book just now. Anyway, I plan to investigate further today. I will solve this mystery one way or another!

    • Now THAT’s a very sensible theory Miss D! If Freddy has run into issues with other prowlers in the dark of night he just might appreciate having a frogbodyguard of his very own. I intend to keep a much closer eye on this situation as the days go by believe me!

    • HA! I can just see my Mom sitting outside at 4:30AM trying to stay awake long enough to catch these two arriving on the doorstep together….LOL….actually this morning I was thinking about how HIGH the steps are for Freddy to get up. There are only two steps from sidewalk to front porch BUT that’s a pretty good-sized hop (unless he’s riding on Stevie’s back up there!!!!).

  4. Too hilarious! Here is what I think. Freddie was taking a dip in the “pool” and Stevie came around for her food. She found Freddie there. He leaped out of the bowl and sat and watched her eat. BTW Stevie appears to be in awfully good shape for being a stray cat. Her fur is all shiny and everything. Are you sure that she isn’t someone’s cat? Love, Cody

    • Hi Cody! Oh Stevie DEFINITELY belongs to a family in our neighborhood but she much prefers OUR HOUSE to her own! She sleeps here frequently (in one of the rockers on the front porch) and likes to nap on our deck out back – she keeps other neighbor cats away from our house (very protective)….she thinks this is her “other home” and I suppose it is. The only thing is when I try to go out my OWN door and Stevie is there she comes up and pokes me in the face and tries to make me go away (which I do because I’m a very timid guy). It would be nice if we could be friends but this arrangement seems to work OK – I’m mostly an inside cat anyway…I just make faces at her out the windows by the door which is FUN. 😉

  5. Dear Sammy,
Hmm, me once dated a owl (yous heard the story the Owl and Pussycat). But a frog…That is a hard one to twist my brain around.

    • Hi Nellie…..I agree…..it’s an unlikely pairing but you know they say opposites attract! I know about the Owl and the Pussycat and of course someone else reminded me about Kermit and Miss Piggy. You just never really know!

    • Hi Katie….! Well, if it’s all a dream, my Mom’s having the same dream – she’s the first one to find Stevie and Freddy hanging out together on my front porch in the dark most mornings. I’m thinking this is no romantic attachment – just one of convenience. Freddy likes to take a good soak in Stevie’s water bowl and Stevie likes the taste of frog flavored water!

  6. A real life Mr. Toad! I wonder what they’re meeting to chat about? Perhaps Freddy just really wants that bath? I vaguely remember Sammie (our Sammie) making friends with a spider–but they didn’t meet up more than once! Very peculiar indeed.

    • Perhaps there’s more going on in our neighborhood than I realize, hence the “meeting over coffee (or water)” on my front porch every morning between Freddy and Stevie? Gossip or romance – the mind boggles. Freddy has been IN the water bowl before so I’m sure at least PART of the reason is a good soak, but there may be more to this than meets the eye!! I’ve never made friends with a spider before but we’ve seen some black widows in the yard and I know FOR SURE they aren’t very friendly!

      Happy Friday…….

    • Hi Basil! I know if I was a frog I’d be quite happy to have a “view from the top of a cat” sitting on Stevie’s head during a hunting expedition. I much prefer THAT scenario frankly than the possibility there’s a budding romance between the two of them. That gives me goosebumps (or warts) just thinking about it! Tee Hee

  7. A very unlikely couple. In fact I am intrigued. Cats catching and eating frogs I know about and have witnessed. Befriending them? That’s something else. He’s not a prince in disguise is he?

    Like

    • HA! I truly am intrigued too – Stevie loves to hunt and often consumes her prey on OUR front porch (sadly), but she hasn’t made a move on Freddy (apparently). Freddy and Stevie have both been around for quite a while but it’s just in the last couple of months that they appear TOGETHER on our front porch! Truth is often stranger than fiction…. (also apparently).

    • I know! Talk about “the odd couple” – but then again there are other theories about this pairing like perhaps they are hunting buddies??? I don’t know quite WHAT to think but I’m keeping a close eye on the situation!!
