Memorial Day Activity

Standard

So yesterday was another hot and sunny day….lots of holiday activities going on around our neighborhood.  There was a big soccer game over at the elementary school, there were cookouts all over the place (ahhhh the smell of charcoal wafting through the air), and the little neighbor boys next door enjoyed their kiddie pool by having a contest to see who could splash the most water OUT of it when they jumped into it!

I’m not sure how many of you have seen this photo I posted on my blog last year of my Cousin Toby (who lives in West Virginia with my Aunt Carol) in his back yard pool.  Toby loves the pool AND the water hose equally well:

Cousin Toby is a Shih Tzu and he loves playing in the water!

I think he thinks it’s a great big water dish.

A small herd of deer came out of the woods this afternoon and ate some stuff from Mom’s garden – or – as she calls it – the “All You Can Eat Salad Bar”………

Deer helping themselves to sunflower seeds in the birdfeeders

So it really was an eventful day………..I didn’t do much except go out on the front porch with Mom a couple of times until I got too hot…..and watched her put some more Memorial Day patriotic decorations up – a big red/white & blue bow on our porch railing where the shiny banner is AND a red/white & blue windsock hanging from a tree branch in the front yard.  Turned out the deer who were munching in the backyard walked around to the FRONT yard after they ate and stopped in their tracks when they saw the windsock blowing around with its’ long streamers!  They had no idea what it was……their eyesight isn’t all that great……they stared for a minute then turned around and ran back into the backyard and disappeared in the woods!   Silly deer!

I told Mom she should hang some windsocks around her gardens so maybe the deer would go to someone else’s “All You Can Eat Salad Bar” for their meals from now on……..I’m so full of GREAT ideas aren’t I ?Happy Monday Peeps!Sammy

  1. That sounds like a great idea – scare those deer away from munching in your yard! Enjoy your day today, Sammy! We are having a cookout with all the family here, including my mom from Florida! Busy day here!

  2. Hi, Sammy, I think those deer would soon learn that the windsocks won’t hurt them…and they’d still munch away. But it’s worth a try!
Hope you have a nice Memorial Day – relaxing!

    • Hi Sundae…you’re probably right – once they see it’s just flapping in the breeze, they’ll go ahead and have a meal in the garden. But yesterday it sure did a good job scaring them away!!

      Happy Memorial Day

  3. Hope the sawing was finished early in the day, Sammy. Sounds like your house might be the most patriotic one in the neighborhood. Hmm, maybe your Mom should hang different things in the trees so when the deer get used to one, she can put up another one and keep them guessing!! Like you do with your Tuesday Teaser and us!!

    • That’s a GREAT idea Miss June! I bet a wind chime would do the trick too……hmm….I’ll tell her it was YOU who suggested that we keep the deer guessing!

  4. I love the picture of the doggie pool! I tried one here one year and none of my dogs were interested in it, which was a disappointment. But my grandkids loved it! I hope you have a wonderful Memorial Day!

    • Hi Miss Trish….too bad your doggies didn’t “get” the pool idea because it sure would have kept them nice and cool – HOWEVER, with the doggie door they can come and go from the heat whenever they want so maybe they don’t need a “cool off pool” after all!

Happy Memorial Day to you too!

  5. That IS a good idea, Sammy… you know… the windsock in the salad bar… I’ll mention it to the peep in case we have any deer issues. You never know, she just might do that! purrs

    • Hi Nerissa! Apparently anything that distracts them might keep them from eating our peeps gardens – the windsock did the trick but it was a “flag” colored windsock for the holiday and Mom will be putting it away with our other decorations……….BUT we have several windchimes and someone else suggested old CDs hanging from the branches!

    • Yeah – I can’t believe it either BUT they are and I also didn’t know they had some vision issues that have to do with movement – live and learn huh????

    • Hi Savannah…sadly my Mom’s computer is older than dirt and we can’t watch videos BUT six deer against one cat seems a little bit SCARY to me! I’ve never been really close to a deer before – across the yard a few times but not CLOSE. The deer seemed to be a little confused when they saw me….TEE HEE….probably thought I was a miniature deer.

      • oh my Cat!!! Tuff to do all the cool things you do on your blog with an oldy but goody computer! So in the video, the cat encounters a hers of 6 deer, one bug buck on a street…the deer are as curious about the cat as the cat is about them…totally cool encounter…and no one hurt

    • Hi Nellie! We don’t have any veggies in our gardens, just flowers and stuff BUT my Mom does have a nice tomato plant in a big planter on our deck….it’s got lots of little baby tomatoes on it right now! I don’t like them but my parents LOVE homegrown tomatoes. I haven’t seen the deer this morning yet but I bet they’ll show up soon….usually early in the morning and late in the afternoon – they munch their way through! Do you like to eat vegetables Nellie? I’ve never had one – unless you count the lawn as a vegetable.

    • HA! The only animal I’ve ever chased out of our yard was a fox and my Mom just about had a fit when I took off after it down into the woods! Needless to say she came flying down after me – the fox was long gone but I was pretty puffed up with pride for being “Mr. Tuff Guy” – Mom was just glad I was alive. 😀
