Chasing The Sun

Ahh....this spot will be sunny for AT LEAST another hour!

Hey...what happened...a few minutes ago the whole stair was covered in sun!

One thing all of us felines have in common it seems is our love of a nice, sunny spot…..sometimes we want to sleep in the sun puddle, sometimes we carry a favorite toy over to play with in the sun, sometimes it’s just to FEEL the sun on our fur.

But we are super good at learning where to be and when to be there in order to follow the sun in our houses.  In my case, we have three floors of possibilities.  Upstairs, while I love to snooze on my parents’ bed – it’s getting tougher to get up there as my “springiness” begins to get less effective as I age…..but the sun comes in the front windows best and the guest bedroom gets full sun every morning.  Then on the main floor, I have the stairs (like the photo), the library rug and Mom’s chair, under the dining room table (my pouting spot) and then in the afternoon when the sun is in the back of the house, I have the back of the couch OR I ask “pretty please” to go out on the deck in the sun so I can roll around and sunbathe.

Down in the basement I have a chair with an old yellow blanket on it that sits right in front of the french doors out to the backyard.  The chair has been right in that spot for my whole life and in the late afternoon I can ALWAYS be found snoozing there.

The sun feels good on my old bones……!

Oh – and before I forget to tell you – I’ve started my Santa Wish List and top of the list is something I overheard Mom and Dad talking about the other day – some “cat stairs” or a “carpeted ramp” so I can get up on my parents bed a bit easier since it’s so high off the ground, AND a nice heated and snuggly fleece lined bed so I can stay warm when Mom’s lap and legs (or a sun puddle) aren’t available!  I bet Santa can fit that stuff on his sleigh along with all the other stuff he’ll be delivering to us cats who’ve been good all year long so Santa will come – – – – am I right?

Happy Wednesday…… 🙂

  1. Good. Finally got the notification of your blog all straightened out Sammy.

All those Christmas wishes sound like a good deal for you, and I am certain Santa will take very good care of you, even if you haven’t been such a good cat throughout the year – but because you’re so darn good looking and cute . . .

    • Hi Uncle J! Yep – I’ve really worked hard on deserving a visit from Santa this year – no doubt he won’t let me down…..he hasn’t yet! 🙂 Thanks for the compliments – I am kinda cute aren’t I ?!!

  2. I know what you mean, Sammy. My favorite place is on the dining room rug in the afternoon sun. Mmmmm, comfy!
Wow, sounds like Christmas is gonna be super fun around your house!Mom says if I don’t stop nipping at her when we’re playing, I’m not going to get anything but coal. Wonder what that means? Would you put a word in with Santa, for me – please?? I think I may need it.

    • Oh Sundae I’m POSITIVE Santa Paws is going to visit you even if you give your Mom a bit of a nip once in a while. I do that sometimes too – not to be mean of course – but just because I get excited and carried away and “accidently” scratch or bite her when we play! You’d better hang up a stocking somewhere because I’m sure you will get something (NOT coal either – it’s yucky and dirty and Mom mentions that to me sometimes when I’ve been extra naughty).

  3. Wish you best on those cool presents from Santa. My Mom & Dad put Mom’s old cedar chest at the bottom of their (actually my) bed and attached a really nice comfy rug on the top of it. It is a great landing place for me to use up and down from their (actually my) bed. It is harder for us Senior guys to make those cool jumps we used to make. Plus, as you probably have heard . . . my weight is just a little more than the average boy . . . at 27 lbs. That is a lot of weight to fly through the air.
Have a great, sunny day, Sammy, The Talking Cat

    • WOW Sammy! That’s a super idea your parents had about the cedar chest. We have two of those chests in our house – one from each of my Grandmas in fact. That would sure HELP be get up on the bed. My parents bed is WAY WAY high off the ground – swell for them but mighty hard anymore for me. Thanks for the idea! Getting old is a pain (for real). We Sammys have to keep from breaking a bone or spraining something so we need all the help we can get (especially you since you’re jumbo-sized!).

Happy Sunny Day to you too!

        • Oh wow….well, sorry about the reminder that Cat’s no longer there and in need of a “leg up”. We thought about a footstool for Sam but our bed is WAY up high and he needs more height than that. We think my Mom’s old Chinese carved chest will do just fine. It’s just sitting in the guest room doing nothing but looking pretty so we’re giving it a try as Sam’s “helper”…….I’ve also found some steps online that will work if the chest doesn’t. Amazing how many things are out here to help our animals out with their various elder issues!

          • We do things for them without giving much thought (at the time) to what we’re doing – much like we do for other “best friends” I suppose. By the way, since our last exchange, we’ve installed the chest at the foot of our bed with a quilt on top – – – perhaps we’ll have a “test run” tonight!

  4. Really clear pic of Sam’s extra big toe here and all his lovely ginger tabby stripes too.
BTW some friends have given their aging cat some glucosamine especially marketed for pets. They call it his naughty pill as when he has it he can spring up to all the forbidden places!

    • Hi Isobel………I’ve been thinking about trying the glucosamine for pets with Sam but he’s impossible to give medication to. I’d be willing to try though if it would help. It’s just his front leg which seems to bother him once in a while but I hate to see him limp – it breaks my heart! Thanks for reminding me about it.

  5. Sam, our mom wrote about providing a “step up” to the bed for older cats. Some of those cat ramps are kind of ugly. There are lots of pretty step stool matching your decor available. Sounds like Santa is going to be very generous.

    • Hi Layla’s “Gang” ! You’re right about some of those ramps – they are icky looking and we have seen some steps that are pretty nice looking……we might try out someone’s suggestion of putting an old chest at the foot of the bed too – there’s one available up here on this floor in the guest room in fact. Perhaps with a nice cozy quilt on top it would work? I think we’ll give it a try anyway – if it’s not enough “help” then we’ll probably get some pretty stairs. Not easy getting older is it?! Mom and Dad remind me that they’re getting old right along with me – which is one reason why they plan to leave this big 3 story place for a place that’s more “elder friendly” 🙂 🙂

Thanks for reminding me that your Mom has written about helping older cats – she really knows everything there is to know about we feline kids!

  6. I’m glad you’re already thinking of Santa gifts, Sammy! My Mommy has also been talking about some little steps up to her bed for me. My collie sister and foxhound sister don’t get on the bed, so I DO and I am a little waddle kind of guy (with loads of sex appeal) and a carpeted ramp or stairs makes things SO much easier. Especially as we (gulp) age! Love from your friends, Eddie (the JR), Simone (the collie) and Mattie (the foxhound)

    Like

    • Hi Eddie! Yes indeedy – your legs are a LOT shorter than Mattie’s or Simone’s and you deserve an easy way up to snuggle with your Mom at night! A little step or two would be perfect for you – maybe even a footstool or something. We little ones need help sometimes – especially as we age. Santa Paws is coming to town soon so make sure you start on your wish list soon!!!
