Remember Pet Rocks??

Sam napping in the guest room

Snoozing on the guest room bed....on a quilt my Auntie Carol made.....

One of the favorite napping positions of a cat (so I hear) is this one…..curled up in a little ball – nose to tail – conserving body heat…..nice and neat and compact!  Right?  Mom said yesterday (much to my confusion) that I looked just like a PET ROCK she used to have many years ago.

Pet rock?  Huh?  Apparently back a million years ago when she was young (tee hee) someone had a brilliant idea how to make a bunch of money by finding smooth round rocks and painting cats on them.  Not just cats – other stuff too – but we cats often curl up in a ball to sleep and so we made a perfect “model”  for these pet rocks.

Last night on TV Mom and Dad were watching the international channel and the Japanese station was featuring (are you ready?) a family that lives in a mountainous area in Japan where there’s a lot of snow in the winter…..they live by a river…..and throughout the snowy days they all sit inside their house and paint cats on smooth river stones they’d collected the rest of the year.  They sell them in stores and they are quite popular.  How cool is that?  They were really neat – very colorful and beautifully painted.

Mom still has her pet rock from long ago.   She says she hasn’t seen them in shops for many years but it sounds like a way FUN thing to do with a smooth stone don’t you think?  Meanwhile, I guess I can continue to be her personal PET ROCK…..curled up in a ball in the sunshine, making her remember “the old days” which in turn always makes her smile REAL BIG.

Sammy, The Pet Rock 🙂

  1. First, I LOVE that quilt. What pattern is that do you think? The pieces seem so darn tiny!
Second, how weird was that…?…You’re reminded of pet rocks at one point during the day, which isn’t an everyday occurrence because I think a lot of us have forgotten about “Pet Rocks”, then you see a thing on TV about it that night! Cool.
Maybe Sammy’s image on a smooth rock one of these days is on your painting agenda?!
    Happy Saturday.

    • Hi Dee……that quilt is a “colorwash” pattern and YES the pieces are truly tiny. It’s made from nine different fabrics and they’re blended so well that it really does look like a painting. My sister is an amazing quilter and that particular quilt is king size – imagine how much work that took with inch sized pieces!!! Anyway, I agree that it was weird to have two reminders of pet rocks on the same day – maybe they’re making a comeback? 🙂 I should do a Sammy Rock – you’re right. I’ll keep on the alert for the perfectly rounded rock and give it a try.

      Happy Saturday back atcha!

  2. Good morning, Sam,
That definitely sounds like a synchronicity yesterday – your mom talking about her pet rock, and then the show on tv last night!
You’re much better than a pet rock though: softer, more cuddly! And I’m sure mom loves you MUCH more than she ever did her pet rock!
    Love, Sundae

  3. I’m getting an inferiority complex just looking at your good housekeeping!
Both Cat and Not Cat (have) really like(d) sleeping on the blanket folded at the end of the bed. Mind you, Not Cat was virtually under the quilt this afternoon. And it’s not cold.
This is another picture where Sam looks spookily like Cat.

    • HA! Housekeeping is pretty darn easy since it’s just me and hubby and Sam even though this is a three story house…..AND we’re retired and therefor home all the time – so how much of a mess can we really make anyway? As for Sam and Cat looking so much alike – you’re ever so right – they REALLY do – and we both know, there’s just nothing like a ginger for “handsome-ness” !! 🙂

  4. Oh yeah, I remember the Pet Rock. I never managed to talk myself into getting one though. Haha! I would though if momma would paint you all snug on your very own pet rock. Talk to her. I’d buy it.

    • Hi Uncle Jerry……..Mom’s been giving the painting rocks thing a bit of thought since yesterday……maybe it’s time those things “came back” ??? I’ll try to talk her into it. I’m pretty good at that. 🙂
