Yowza! It’s HOT…

Heatwave?  Yeah man….I’d say so….hotter than hot even!  When I got Mom up this morning for her “feed Sam breakfast” duty call, the windows were totally fogged up – they STILL are and I bet they will be all day long.  Mom says the humidity is as high as the temperature.  All I know is it’s pretty icky and sticky.

I tried to be helpful to Mom this morning because it’s laundry day.  I like laundry day as those of you know who have been reading my blog.  The laundry basket becomes “available” on laundry day for me to play in AND Mom takes the sheets off her bed and changes them – I’m AT THE READY to help!  Here I am just after she got the blanket back on – if I play my cards right I can keep her from putting on the bedspread every single time by snuggling down for a nap – she can’t resist leaving me to snore away…..I’m sneaky like that!

Sam making himself comfy while I'm TRYING to put fresh sheets on the bed!

My favorite blanket just happens to be on Mom's bed.....I have to time it JUST RIGHT on sheet changing day so I can grab a nap before the bedspread goes back on!!

Hey!  Do you HAVE to use the flash on the camera?  How’s a guy supposed to get any rest with lights going off all over the place?

See – it’s all about timing….timing it just right to get a nap on Mom’s blanket is just one of the reasons I keep a close eye on things around here on laundry day.  Now my next trick will be waiting for the laundry basket to come out of the closet so I can “hitch” a ride inside it when Mom takes it down to the laundry room!

I hope it’s cooler in your part of the world than it is here….but if not, STAY COOL – well, since you’re reading my blog I already know you’re “cool” (wink wink)!!  Right?

Move? Hmm…Only If I Get a Screened Porch!

Whoa….just got back inside from a very quick porch break and as much as I like a sniff of fresh air – I’m glad to be in the house again.  It’s hot and humid already and it’s still so early!  There’s no breeze – I can’t smell anything out there – not man nor beast (haha).

I'll just stay inside and play all day......

It's a good day to stay inside and PLAY all day!

I heard Mom and Dad talking last night about maybe moving to a new house.  Something smaller because they don’t really need such a big place since it’s just us here…..I’m not sure how I feel about that.  This is the only place I’ve ever lived !  Will I have stairs to play on in the new house?  Will I have a yard and gardens?  Can I look out the windows and watch birds and squirrels and deer?  Lots of things to think about……but one thing they DID say that I like – they said they would DEFINITELY build a big screened porch FOR ME!!!!!  Well, maybe not JUST for me – I’m sure they would like having one too – but I would really like that a whole lot.  Outside smells and feeling but no bugs to bug me and I’d be safe so Mom wouldn’t have to stay with me every minute I’m “out”… THAT sounds great.

We’d also stay here in this same town……just move to a place that’s not so much to take care of.  We have all these rooms that we don’t need (well THEY don’t need….I just consider them quiet napping spots where nobody will bother me!!!).  I suppose it wouldn’t be so bad…………something to think about……………it would be weird living in a new place after all these years but…….that screened porch sounds pretty good to me!

Happy Wednesday from Sammy, One Spoiled, Cool Cat!

Sam’s Tuesday Morning Ramblings…..

Hi People (and Cats!)…..yesterday Mom and I sat at the computer and she visited a lot of other cat blogs so we could get some ideas for what I can write about.  There are some really super sites and fun photos of other cats (of course I’m the cutest one) and maybe one day MY blog will be as popular as some of the others are.  But, while that would be nice, and I love being the center of attention of course, I’m just happy to share what’s going on in my world – which often isn’t very exciting – every morning.  I enjoy sitting on Mom’s lap while she helps me do my blog and deciding what photo to post with it.  It’s “our time”.

Today’s photo isn’t of me – it’s of the plants around our front door on the porch… of my favorite spots is that porch and I love the flowers.  I sniff each pot of flowers every morning just in case a juicy bug might be lurking – something I need to “take care of” (if you know what I mean…yum!):

Potted plants on Sam's front porch.

The entrance to MY house....well, OUR house to be exact!

Also, Mom and I got some inquiries from people about yesterday’s blog post – the story of little Dedo the Gargoyle.  Anybody looking for their OWN Dedo can just to a search online for Dedo sculptures and a LOT of sites pop up that sell them.  Mom says we might need to get a new Dedo one of these days since my own little buddy is getting a little bit…..well…..crumbly!   The actual story of Dedo is longer than what I posted yesterday – Dedo actually saved the life of a little boy who got lost in Notre Dame and wound up out on the roof – he slipped and his shirt or coat got stuck on Dedo’s toes!

Well, I’m off to go demand – er – I mean ASK for some breakfast.  Gotta keep my energy level up….takes a lot of that to keep this house going……it’s a BIG job, but I’m just the guy to do it!

Sam’s “Friend” DeDo the Gargoyle

Hi Everyone!  Today my blog isn’t “all about me” for a change – I’m going to tell you about another “friend” of mine – he guards the entrance to our house and his name is DeDo the Gargoyle!  Mom says she and Dad first heard about DeDo on their honeymoon a bazillion years ago (well…not QUITE that many but you know) when they were in Paris, France.  The guide at Notre Dame told DeDo’s legend and Mom fell in love with this little guy (not as much as she loves ME ME ME though!).  Here he is by the steps to our front door:

DeDo the Gargoyle: A Parisian Legend

My buddy of the front entrance of my house!

Poor DeDo has been through a whole lot – Mom’s had him for many years and he has a chipped toe, a crack across his head, and a little piece of his nose has disappeared too but he’s still hanging in there guarding the door.  Wanna know more about him?  It’s a very cool story!  Here’s what Mom says:

Little Dedo is a small gargoyle pointy ears and human-like feet on the Nortre Dame Cathedral in Paris. When the cathedral was built in 1160, a nun from a tiny convent in Provence who disliked the menacing gargoyles that were put on top of the building to ward off evil spirits, disguised herself as a workman, gained entrance to the work site and quickly carved the sculpture from a small block before placing it on the highest roof.

How cool is that?????  She says if DeDo can ward off evil spirits for a big huge place like that cathedral, surely he can keep the bad stuff away from OUR house!  I think she’s right……every single morning when I go out the front door I visit DeDo and give him a sniff.  Just saying “good morning and thanks for keeping an eye on my house buddy”……..doesn’t hurt to stay in good with a gargoyle – right?

Sammy, One Spoiled Cat (with a gargoyle for a friend!)

The gargoyle was undiscovered for centuries until a small boy, lost in the labyrinthine structure, stumbled off a ledge and rolled down a roof into the arms of the gargoyle. Since its rediscovery, the creature has been affectionately known as Little Dedo, the gargoyle with the crossed toes.

Sam’s Sunday Housekeeping

My toy box is actually a toy WAGON!

My toy box is actually a toy WAGON!

So Mom told me this morning that it’s time we clean out my wagon.  I’m not sure how I feel about that because all the stuff I have is pretty fun stuff but she promised if I get rid of OLD stuff there would be NEW stuff coming my way!  I do have a few things that I suppose won’t be TOOOOO tough to part with like:

  • Feathered bird toy with one measly feather left on it
  • Mouse toy with NO ears left and half of a tail
  • Rubber octopus toy with only three “arms” left on it

I COULD give those up if I have to…..wonder what happened to all the missing parts???? (tee hee)

The only other fun thing I plan to do today is clean out my tent.  I tend to collect “stuff” in there and sometimes when I’m looking for a particular toy to ask Mom to throw for me to fetch or toss up the stairs for me to get I can’t FIND it……because I’ve stashed it in my tent and forgotten about it!

Hey...this thing isn't just good for camping - it's good for HIDING toys too!

Hey...this thing isn't just good for camping - it's good for HIDING toys too!

So you see, today is going to be a busy day in my house.  But know what?  I don’t mind……..I need lots of stuff to do so I can stay out of trouble.  Not an easy thing to do for a guy like me!

Happy Sunday from Sam, One Spoiled Cat (with lotsa toys)

Sam’s Pet Cat (huh?)

Sam Playing on Stairs With Stuffed Cat

I am a responsible cat caretaker! I learned HOW from my parents!

You all know that we have a neighborhood cat who visits us almost every morning to say hello (and get a treat!) and we call her “Stevie” (well, Daddy named her actually).  ANYWAY, Mom said this morning that she thinks I can officially call her my pet cat!  Why?  Well, when Stevie shows up, I go find Mom and tell her that Stevie’s here on the front porch.  In the morning I won’t even eat my own breakfast until Stevie shows up and gets her treat from Mom – THEN I can relax and eat my own food.  I stand guard at the door looking for her and after SHE eats, I eat.  It’s important to me that my little friend gets taken care of FIRST.

Mom says that’s a big step forward for me.  I used to get very upset when Stevie would come into my yard – and especially if she came up to me and tried to make friends if I was out there already!  I’d run for the nearest door so I could get away from her…..she scared me – but then EVERYTHING scared me.  In time I got to the point where if she would come up to me I’d just lie down where I was and let her sniff me a little but not too much… I can tolerate being around her for a few minutes as long as we are at opposite spots on the front porch or in the yard.  I don’t trust many other people OR animals – Mom says that’s because I was a feral kitten.

After Stevie gets her morning treat (I watch her from inside the house of course), off she goes to spend her day prowling around the neighborhood.  Often she comes back in the evening again and I go tell Mom she’s here……..Mom will give her another treat or make sure the big bowl of water we keep on the porch is full in case she’s thirsty.

I learned how to take care of something you care about from my Mom and Dad who take such good care of me.  I just want to “pass it on” by making sure that Stevie – who obviously knows a good home when she sees one (!!) – is taken care of when she visits.  So, doesn’t that make me a good pet caretaker?????????????

Mommy In Wonderland

Back Garden

One of my favorite garden areas because of the bird feeders (tee hee)

So, here’s the scoop fans!  Yesterday while filling up the bird feeders in one of the back gardens (my favorite spot because of all the birds, squirrels and chipmunks who visit!) my Mom fell into a hole!  Yep – just like Alice In Wonderland!  Cool huh?  Well, SHE didn’t think so.  I was outside with her at the time – minding my own business of course – when I heard her say a BAD WORD.  Turns out she wasn’t watching where she was walking and right by that GREAT BIG GREEN PLANT in the picture above is a hole.  Her foot went down into the hole and it made her twist her back and her – er – um – “backside” muscles.  Now that of course effected ME because she has to be sitting down in her recliner for me to lie on her legs and have a decent nap!!!  Her “backside” hurt so much after that incident that she was kind of squirmy all afternoon when she was sitting!  Not good for quality napping.

Poor Mom.  I’m happy to report she was sore all day and into the evening but this morning she’s much better.

Now for WHY there was a hole by that big plant in the first place!  See, when it rains, water used to collect right there by that big plant area so Daddy put in a drain pipe under ground from where the rocks line the garden to the BACK of the garden by that big old hollow tree.  Water just goes through the pipe down into the woods!  The chipmunks figured out that it was a great “shortcut” through the garden – AND of course a great place to hide from yours truly when I’m back there poking around.  Little smartie pants chipmunks love their little underground tunnel!  Over time, at the front entrance of the tunnel a sort of deep hole has appeared because of the way the dirt washes down along with the rain….Daddy keeps the hole clear so the water (and chipmunks!) can go through.  I guess they will figure out some way to put some rocks in the hole to keep Mom from going to WONDERLAND again………

See?  Never a dull moment around here !

Sammy, One Spoiled Cat (who’s looking forward to a decent lap nap today)

My nice shady back yard hideaway (one of them!)

I'll be outside enjoying the gardens today - for a change!

Goodie!   Last night we had a bit of rain (yes I hid in the basement because of thunder!!) but this morning – it’s REALLY nice outside….so nice I let Mom put on my “sweater” (that’s what she calls my harness) and out we went in the dark before the sun came up……I love to go out and sniff around before anybody is awake.  Mom looks at the stars and I look at the trees for birds just waking up!  Anyway, it was way cooler – very nice – a little wind so I could hold up my nose and see who else might be around……I stopped walking at one point because I could smell deer – sure enough there they were – moving through the neighbor’s front yard.  Six of them.  Then five minutes later the neighborhood cat that comes for a handout showed up!  We had to come inside so Mom could get a treat for her.  I decided to stay inside and just watch “Stevie” (our visitor) through the front door windows.  We hadn’t seen her for a couple of days so I was glad she was OK.

SO – do you get the idea I’m happy this morning?  I sure am.  It’s been too hot to be outside and today it’s nice so I’ll be out there as much as Mom will let me.  I know she has stuff to do today so I’ll have to be patient and take my turn to ask to go out – BUT I pretty much have her wrapped around my little paw (well, big paws since I have extra toes!!) – SOOOOOOOO – I hope wherever you guys are it’s a nice day too so you can take your little (or big) pet children out for a walk to enjoy the air.

As I said before…………….YIPPEEEEE!!!!!

Enjoying the yard and the nice fresh air!

A Summer “Getaway” Spot?

Oil Painting of house on lake with porch and rocker

Looks like a nice place to spend a summer......sigh.....

Just sharing a picture of one of my Mom’s oil paintings…..why?  Well, because in the morning when we are in her office working on my blog (tough work ya know!)….I sit on the arm of the couch and STARE at this painting on her wall…..a lot.  I like to imagine what it would be like if this was a REAL place and I had this big front porch to lie on (or under!) and that boat to maybe hop into and curl up and listen to the water on the lake……or even if Mom was sitting in the rocker with her legs propped up on the railing and ‘lil ole me was lying on her legs snoring!  Wouldn’t that be cool?  Maybe it’s just because it looks COOL in this picture.  Yesterday it was in the 100s here and far from cool.  I was inside all day long.  Not that Mom didn’t open the door for me to go out if I wanted to – but when she did open the door I backed away like there was a monster out there!

Anyway, back to the painting……it might be fun to pack up all my toys and my cushions and treats along with Mom and Dad and go to a lake house – – – – except for one thing – – – – I just bet you can guess by now what that might be???????

THE CAR MONSTER………I’d have to ride there in the car and probably for a loooooooooooooooooong time and that just won’t do!  Nosirrrreeeeeeeeeeeeee – not this boy.  So, I guess that means that I’ll just settle for this house (which is pretty “cushy”) in this heat (which I don’t have to be out in anyway) and be mighty happy to have that.  Just think about all the animals without just ONE home – much less TWO.

Gee, I feel so much better now that I’ve figured out for sure that “there’s no place like home”………..meanwhile I can always look at the painting and imagine……………one thing cats are very good at doing!

Dog (cat??) Days of Summer

Cousin Toby cooling down in his pond

My Cousin Toby has the right idea - keeping cool !

Now this is what I call a great way to stay cool on a hot day!  We’re going to be into the 100s today and I’m kind of thinking Cousin Toby is one smart shih-tzu in figuring out how to be comfortable if you’re in the great outdoors.  Cousin Toby and my Aunt Carol (and my other Cousin Mollye) live on top of a mountain in West Virginia.  Aunt Carol had this way neato pond and mini-waterfall in the backyard and it didn’t take Cousin Toby long to discover if he plopped down on his belly in the pond, he’d get cooled off.

We don’t have a pond…..but we DO have a woods, and it’s a lot cooler down in the woods.  Mom and Dad made a path down to a little patio that has a bench that swings on it and it’s a nice spot for me to hop onto and keep an eye on things sometimes.   Still, on a day like today is going to be, the best place will probably be INSIDE the house.  I can just sit on my perch and see all the other creatures out there in the heat……..

What a view!

Staying cool inside...watching everything else out in the heat!

I do feel bad for all the cats and dogs who have no home to stay cool in…..they have to do the best they can to survive.  Mom keeps a big bowl of water on our front porch for any cats who need a drink as they make their way around the community – and there are several of them who know it’s there and come to sit on the shady porch and enjoy a cool drink of water.  I’m very lucky to be “off the streets” and living in my nice home.   I think about that EVERY SINGLE DAY!

Remember on hot days to make sure your pets are inside as much as they can be, but if they are outside, they need plenty of fresh water and a safe, shady spot like I have!
